anyone deal with broken bones?

Recommended Posts

Ok... so DS13 was feeling pretty good. Finished a 2-week course of prednisone about 3 weeks ago, which did successfully end his sinus flare up and significantly decrease his PANDAS symptoms. He was starting to enjoy physical activity again and then fell and broke his arm (radius)last week.

Now he is in a full arm cast - complete with itching inside and lots of compulsions to try to move the arm inside and wiggle around.

The problem is that it seems like the OCD is over the roof right now. I have to help him with homework as his dominant hand is in the cast. Tonight was crazy. Says he can't see to read, completely unfocused, really stuck on silly things like needing sticky tack (the stuff you use to hang up pictures). At one point he made a mistake when multiplying two numbers with the calculator and then spent at least 5 minutes trying to recreate the mistake so he could figure out what he did - all this with me sitting next to him waiting to write down the numbers. I finally lost my temper and yelled and that ended the compulsion but not in a good way (as you can imagine).

Has anyone else dealt with broken bones and do you have any advice here? I have him on quercetin and fish oil and have been giving ibuprofen 2x per day (he gets liver functions checked regularly).

Interestingly, his arm did not swell at all with the break (about 3/4 through the radius). Could this be from all the anti inflammatory stuff we do?

I am open to other ideas!!! Let me know if you've been through this!

Wow, didn't that happen over the summer, too? I'm sorry to hear!

Well, I have no experience there. But I can tell you that we got through hernia surgery without a hitch in august (same idea, tissue damage). We also got through influenza A, but that is where our luck has ended. We then got strep and I can't seem to bring down the inflammation now. (I am planning to add quercetin, too).

Even with all that said, I don't think there is any way to rule out the contribution of the broken bone to pandas. I would think it would have a different "flair", though, than a strep infection. Milder symptoms, maybe, or maybe without some of the tell-tale strep symptoms (fears, sep. anxiety).

Good luck!

Google prednisone and you will fine easily broken bone as one of the main side effect.

Yes - I know that is one of the side effects of prednisone but I thought that was seen more with long term usage. That is one of the reasons that I asked this question, but I am not hearing from many people that their kids had broken bones. I've also read that anti inflammatories can make bones easier to break and harder to heal. Again, though, it does not seem that we are seeing lots of broken bones on this forum and...well.. my son was snowboarding which raises the risk of broken bones in itself.

My son does seem to be calming down now. I did not see any of the classical PANDAS stuff (urinary frequency, separation anxiety, tics, OCD)... more the cognitive fog and focusing issues which could have been attributed to being back at school after winter break and adjusting to the cast. I did hear from one parent with a child who had cognitive fog and focusing issues after a broken bone, and one parent (posted in this thread) who had a child that did not have any PANDAS symptoms with a broken bone.

If anyone else has experiences with broken bones, it would be good to hear!
