Stephanie2 Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 My boys have been on augmentin for over 2 weeks now. A week ago, I added OLE for increased efficacy, which did work. But we are stuck with a few minor, resistent symptoms. Should I continue the high-dose augmentin until 100% remission? Since we seem to be "stuck" should I add a steroid burst/pulse (3 days)? WWYD? Here are the remaining symptoms: DS6: mild throat-clearing tic, mild hyperactivity, very mild and transient fears (like once a day...barely on the radar). DS2: mild tongue-thrust tic I know these symptoms are so minor, but a big strep time is coming up in a couple weeks and I want to go into it with zero symptoms/inflammation...
norcalmom Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 personally, I'd be careful with steroids this time of year. They suppress the immune system, making it a lot easier for the kids to come down with something. Aren't we already int he worse time of year for strep? (Oct-April?) . Steroids always seem like a double edge sword to me..Maybe some other anti inflamatory? I 'm sure you already do fishoil. Maybe a couple days of advil?
momaine Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Personally, I'd stick with the high dose Augmentin till 100% recovery.
thereishope Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 I think it's awesome they are at 95% remission in two weeks being that it is not their first exacerbation. It seems the average for the first real exacerbation is between 4-6 weeks to get better. So, because your boys are doing well and progressing, I think you can still wait on the steroid. As for the Augmentin, personally, I think it's a good idea to stay on that if they can tolerate it just because another back to back strep infection can throw you a real curve ball and lay the foundation for a nasty, persistent exacerbation. You could try lowering the Augmentin if you feel it's just too much for their stomachs.
dcmom Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 At 95%, I would not change a thing. Time is always a bog part of the recovery equation (which I am reminding myself now).
mom love Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Personally, I would not add the steroids. I would do 21 days of augmentin and then keep up OLE. Have you used steroids on them in the past bringing them to 100% I am curious about using steroids myself and wondering how kids react on them, particularly with tics.

Yes, I have used a steroid taper (20 days) on my 2yo to bring him to 100% before, including a tongue-thrusting tic that he had.
