Have an appointment

Well after a year of taking baby steps, my wife and I decided to see if we could have detox done on our oldest child. We have been treating him with elimination diet and supplements under a neurologists care since age 4 and decided we need to take a leap with more aggressive action. He is now 6. The posting of the new paper by the Dan doctors on mercury detoxing that Sheila Rogers posted was the final piece of information I needed for making this decision. My son and I are driving into Miami on Wednesday and if anyone wants to know anything about our experience for their own decision making, feel free to either reply to this post or e-mail/pm me. It has been over 4 years now that we have been directly dealing with this issue and even longer that we suspect that something was wrong.

Andy, I was wondering what prompted you to take this step. Are your son's symptoms worsening, and what particular symptoms are they. What about Sheila's article convinced you that detoxing might be your solution.

I'm trying to relate it to my own situation. thanks

Diane

I went to Miami Beach yesterday with my son. We did a before urine sample and after. The chelation that was used was done with an I.V. I do not want to go into detail of the method that was used for my son for every child's medical condition and age/weight should be looked at before selecting treatment. I will tell you that no side affects have been noted after 24hrs. I decided to get an aggressive intrusive procedure for I feel that my son had a bad response to a vaccination shot and everything else that we were doing was great but the causing agent was still in his system henceforth his problem would always be there and perhaps get worse. The doctor that was picked was a DAN doctor who is listed thru this website and recommended from Amy Holmes' website. She is a doctor who I found to be very impressive. I also picked this doctor for I got a parent's recommentation, from personal contacts, and this doctor was part of the team of doctors that was listed in the Autism Mercury Detox paper that Shelia Rogers posted. Basically I wanted a doctor to look into detoxing for my son who knows everything about detoxing. Another reason is that this doctor was no longer then a 3 hr drive from where I live. I made the appointment into a day's outing for my son with visits to many fun sites on the way home. Being a parent who has gotton alot of direction from the people of this site, I would be glad to keep a posting on this matter. Hopefully I would have good news to share over time.

Andy,

Thanks for the sharing! Our doctors also think my so may have heavy metals in his body. His heavy metal hair analysis showed negative. His OAT test didn't show anything special. No yeast problem either (from urine and morning split test). We're sort of clueless at this moment. My son had the Spectracell blood test for vitamin deficiencies and Great Smokies blood elemental analysis test last week. I'm so looking forward to hearing the results back. I'll be very much interested in knowing yours as well as the treatment plan.

Thanks!

Jean,

My son was given a challenge test to test for heavy metals. Standard blood and hair tests often may not reveal mercury as being present due to the fact that the mercury over time may no longer be in the circulation but bound to various organs such as the kidney or the brain. According to the latest Autisum Research Insitute paper on detoxing, the preferred testing method for toxic metals is done by performing a chelation challenge which reveals a toxic metal burden. This would be done with one of the chelating agents such as DMSA, DMPS, etc. I strongly suggest that you look at the paper that I referred to and see what the experts say and then do futher research of your own so you can make an informed decision with what ever direction you may or may not decide to go.. Shelia Rogers had made a posting of it on where you can download your own free copy.

  • 2 weeks later...

I believe that today is the eleventh day since my son had the DMPS IV, with vitamin c added, challange test and my son is doing great. He did develop some humming day 3 after the test but it went away by day 6. My son has a very bad case of TS. We have kepted it under control with a special diet and supplements all based upon blood tests for periods of time but then something sets it off, a cold, clorine in a pool, stress, etc. and it would come back worse. We are now pursuing treatment into detox and then yeast tests to see if treatment is needed there as well to find the missing piece to solving the problem. We are also awaiting results from other tests taken.

Hi Andy,

Your son and my son sound very similar. Our son began with tics in April 2004. Since that time, we've been seeing an Environmental doctor who prescribed a strict diet and supplements based on test results from an IgE blood test and urine tests. When we started Karl on the diet back in Nov/Dec 2004 we really noticed a difference in his tics. But recently, we've noticed some of his tics coming back also as a result of chlorine exposure, cold and stress. We really thought that we had his tics under control and now we're sort of stumped. Still continuing with the strict diet and supplements. Our son tested positive for yeast and the Clostridia bacteria back in November and is currently taking Nystatin (two weeks on and one week off) for the yeast and Culturelle to kill the Clostridia. I just got the book 'the Yeast Syndrome' so I'm hoping to start reading it to see if there is anything else I'm missing.

Our son has just recently started doing more vocal tics like humming, making a low sounding growling noise (I can't explain this one) in addition to coughing, sniffing and clearing his throat. Of course every time I hear one of these my stomach does a flip and I feel like I'm going to throw up. The emotional ups and downs are tremendous.

I think our environmental MD has done great things for us, but I also think he's missing a piece of the puzzle. I think something elso is going on with Karl that just hasn't been uncovered. I just made an appointment for a second opinion with a DAN doctor (it's at the end of May) Dr. James Neubrander from Edison, NJ. I'm hoping that he might have some insight as to what else we can do to either lessen or get rid of Karl's tics. He does a lot of the same testing our current EM doctor does. I know there's an answer out there somewhere. We just have to have patience and know that there's a solution waiting to be uncovered.

I agree Dara, our sons do have alot of the same issues and I have read posts of parents who have or had their kids in the new york/jersey area our son's ages who also had the same issues. Makes one wonder. I really think that the yeast issue-gut repair and detox will be the final two pieces of the puzzel. I am not hoping for a complete recovery but I do expect that he should come out of this in a year or two with the ability to function life without having a tic issue. Keep me posted for as a parent I wish only the best for your family.
