Last week - DS7 had an allergic reaction to Zithromiacin. He is already allergic to Augmentin. Now he is apparently allergic to Omnicef too!!

I'm allergic to nearly every antibiotic myself. But my reaction, as well as his, is hives. Gets worse the longer we are on them. So myself, I can do a 5 day Zpack without much of an issue. Obviously his longer term needs are becoming a huge issue with this. And each time we try any of these - the reaction gets worse.

I'm probably making Dr. T crazy at this point!

What else to do??? Where does one get this Olive Leaf Extract?

UGH Tantrums. I am frustrated for you! I don't know on the olive leaf extract but when I read people mentioning it I assumed it was something from the health food/vitamin type store..

And to boot - my sore throat got so much worse tonight I actually looked. I have white streaks in the back of my throat! Seriously????? Well, at least I have quite the cache of ABX here. Already on them now... UGHHHHHH!!!

Will check the health food store for natural ABX. But obviously not happy about DS not having any at the moment :(

I'd check out Whole Foods if you have one by you. I'd think they may have it. Do you have strep right now? If unsure, also take a decongestant/nasal spray in the event the white streaks are mucus from drainage.

I feel SO bad for you. My DD (non pandas) has allergies to ABX. Fortunately, my PANDAS DS does not. What a nightmare for you. Have you tried working with an allergist (perhaps one who understands PANDAS would be best). I don't know if they'd have much to offer but it may be worth a try.

Sometimes when people think they are allergic to an antibiotic they are really having a herxheimer reaction or die off reaction from Lyme. Azithro doesn't treat Lyme as much as it treats coinfections so your experience makes me wonder about Lyme. Have you been tested? Quite a few people on this forum have identified Lyme as part of their and their child's illness. Just thought I'd throw that out there so you are aware of other possibilities. If Lyme is involved you might get the same reaction from samento, a homeopathic remedy used to treat Lyme. I have heard that olive leaf extract is effective against Lyme but I don't have any experience with it. I mention it in case you get a similar allergic reaction to it. It may not be your problem but I would check it out.

He's been tested in so many ways for Lyme, I've lost track. All negative.

He has an immunologist and I'll be checking with her on the med allergies. Not sure what to do at this point - if we should even try another right now.

I've been taking decongestants for two weeks - have had a miserable cold that has been lingering. I think I succumbed to the strep that his friends have had. UGH! Off to bed - I feel miserable!

There are many tests but most are wrong fifty percent of tye time unless you use igenex which looks for more antibodies to Lyme and more strains of lyme. Dr jones, the famous Lyme specialist told me that a huge percentage of his patients has negative Lyme screening tests and standard western blots. You may already know that so sorry if this is repetitive.

Have you tried Keflex? It isn't listed on your list of tried antibiotics. I know a few have had sucess with that.Lyme Mom, if hives are the physical symptoms indicating allergic reaction, I think it's acceptable (and safe) for everyone to assume he's allergic.

How bad are the hives? I do want to throw out there when two of my kids are sick, they occasionally get hives when they are getting rid of (shedding) an infection....but this is usually with viruses with them. However, I wouldn't mess with experimenting, continuing an antibiotic if posssibly allergic, and have the allergy worsen to the point of closing the throat, etc. But perhaps this is something to discuss with the doctor.

Vickie, that is interesting that your kids occasionally break out in hives when "shedding" an infection. I think that is actually what lyme mom is suggesting in her post. It's possible that children with lyme break out when beginning treatment with an antibiotic as well without it being directly related to the antibiotic itself. I am not saying that this is absolutely what is happening to tamtrums but I think when a child seems "allergic" to every antibiotic they try then something just isn't right. My advice would be to rule out lyme and co-infections.

On a side note, my neighbor's son was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 11. I came to know her more closely this past summer when she opened up about her son's illness. His symptoms sounded more like severe OCD to me and I suggested she have some blood work run to rule out an underlying infection. She found lyme and mycoplasma. Her son is now being treated by an llmd and his last visit with the doctor revealed a bartonella rash on his chest and legs (classic stretch marks). Blood tests for bartonella were all negative. Since this boy rarely leaves his house, we suspect that this in fact is a die off rash as opposed to a recent tick bite. I bring this up only to share that when you start treating for this stuff all kinds of things can show up.

good luck!

Kim

This is interesting! My son always broke in hives with illnesses, all over body hives, since he was a baby. He also broke out in hives with antibiotics. We discovered lyme disease last year and I am always wondering when he got lyme??? Now, I am beginning to think that he has had it for a very long time......

We thought my son was allergic to penicillin and omnicef for years because he would break out in a rash not long after starting the medication. This summer we finally had an oral challenge with our immunologist, and it turns out he isn't allergic at all. Some viruses can interact with the abx. and produce a rash. I truly was convinced my son was allergic, but he has had penicillin and omnicef since his oral challenge and never ended up with a rash. It would be totally worth a try if it could put those meds back in your arsenal. :)

Well today the hives increased once again to the point of swelling of his hands AND feet. This happened when we were in Maine and he had lobster for the first time. When that happened, we ended up in the ER two nights in a row with epi shots and steroids. That was our unplanned "steroid burst" that did NOT go well at all and started to convince me he had TS rather than PANDAS.

We happened to have an appt tonight with a dermatologist. It was there that I saw how swollen he was. The derm gave us 21 days of steroids! UGHHHHHHH!!! So now he is without ABX, I have raging strep and he is on steroids.

I told my husband I may just be moving out!

I am very concerned by this swelling with his hives. It doesnt seem right. all of the doctors we have discussed it with are alarmed as well, but none have any sort of answer for it.
