laure Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 We are headed to Dr. B for our first visit on Wed. I am wondering how on earth my 9 year old will be in the same room with a Dr. for even 30 minutes, talking about her and her "problem" which she won't admit that she has...she doesn't even let anyone else see her take advil/abx, etc. let alone even mention the word PANDAS or strep or brain infection, or anything like that. We cannot even comment on the amount of soap she uses in one handwashing (a whole bottle of softsoap if it is available). So how do you have a coherent conversation with the Dr. if the child wants nothing to do wit it? Any and all help appreciated!
philamom Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 (edited) laure- I usually go to doctor visits with my husband or mother, so they can watch my dd9 in the waiting room while I speak with the doctor alone. My daughter is the same way. Dr. B knows it and gives her a check-up without going into details. In my daughter's case, he checks her sinuses as well. If you can't bring a person to join you, then try writing a note with all the details (even what you mentioned here) to have the staff give to him before seeing you. He is very compasionate and will try not to upset your daughter in any way. Good luck with the appt! Edited September 26, 2010 by philamom

It's always good to write down what you want to say to the doctor anyway.
laure Posted September 27, 2010 Author Report Posted September 27, 2010 I am going to forward our PANDAS journal to Dr. B to read prior to our visit, hopefully. My husband and I are both going, and both really want to be in on the conversation, since we have all been suffering so much. Possibly they will let her sit in the waiting room with a movie on the ipad? She would probably do that since it is a treat for her to watch... Although last night she gave us a lengthy violin and piano concert, and announced that she hadn't been able to do this since before strep, when she didn't have to wash her hands every time she touched her violin! Wow, what a breakthough, her talking about it...

Wow, what a breakthough, her talking about it... I personally witnessed Dr. B recently sitting inside the lobby in the main foyer of his office complex when a family came for their first consult and the child refused to go into any exam room. Dr. B, without hesitating grabbed two chairs and moved them into this open foyer (where the child would agree to go and he could talk somewhat privately to mom). You had to be there. It stopped me in my tracks when I saw this! It confirmed in stone what I already knew...that this man truly does this for the children. Your visit will go well. If you are going on Wednesday you will see him at his Stamford office (much, much smaller than his main office and it gets a little crowded) but he makes it work! Good luck (we will be in his Darien office at the same time for day one of Lauren's IVIG)!

lmkmip67 Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 How did it go? We went today for our first appointment. My son went in the room and insisted on using Dr. B's bathroom. And announced his office haunted (ghosts are the latest fear). Dr. B was awesome! I wanted to take him home with us. We didn't feel rushed or anything and really felt like he cared. I just wish it wasn't so far away. lol
