  1. My son's behaviour sounds similar. He started turning his head, shrugging his shoulders, grimacing, rolling his eyes, and became more anxious about our whereabouts. His writing became sloppy, and he started talking in class. The teacher noticed a difference. He had pneumonia, strep, and an ongoing cough. A few weeks of azithromycin made the difference. Now, I try very very hard to get him azithromycin as soon as he has a fever, to try to prevent all of it from coming out like it did. He says that whenever he has ta fever, he feels like his body wants to do those movements. . Try to see if you can get your hands on azithromycin...the proper dose for strep...and see if you can get it for more than the 5 day treatment. It can clear up all sorts of things that the doctors missed. My ds had enlarged adenoids when he was 3, and I really wish that the doctor had prescribed azithromycin then, rather than just letting it sit. We had the worse experience with a homeopath, who just didn't know what she was doing, and prescribed all sorts of vitamins and minerals, not just homeopathy. Beware. That is our story. I am always always on edge. I wish that I could relax like other parents, but I am always worried that the same thing will happen again, so I try very hard to prevent it from happening again. Last year, was the saddest year going. I realized that my son was different, and I now realized how other families felt. I now work very hard to be very aware of his triggers, and all of his illnesses. It is an ongoing and never ending effort. It is all consuming. It is my priority in life. Don't know if my post will help you. Hope that it does. I believe that the pneumonia is bad news and strep is bad news. Didn't realize it before. Now, every little thing is bad news. I am more aware, and more watchful. I am also more scared.
  2. Wondering if you have noticed the same things.... Decongestants and antihistimines are totally bad news... I keep them far far far away from ds7. They set off bad tics in him that last a long long time. BAD STUFF that I have discovered: 1) antihistimines 2) decongestants 3) sugar 4) lack of sleep or feeling tired 5) too much stress/family arguments/too much homework/negtative environment 6) cheese 7) milk 8) ice cream (maybe the sugar and the dairy) 9) chocolate 10) soy sauce 11) cold cuts with nitrates 12) canned fish (tuna or salmon) and canned soup (fresh fish is ok) 13) fish oil (cod liver oil, sardine oil, salmon oil etc) 14) smoky environment (going to someone's house who smokes in the home) 15) chlorine (swimming in a chlorine pool is out) 16) flouride (cannot have flouride treatment at the dentist without tics coming out afterwards 17) illness such as a cold, flu, pneumonia, sinus infection...anything... as soon as there is a low grade fever, the tics come out...only antibiotics helps slow down the movments from coming back full force, and helps improve the handwriting which goes downhill when ds is sick, and antibiotics helps lessen the anxiety...believe it or not 18) teeth coming out 19) waking up too early to go to hockey practice...so we often do not go, and let him sleep in instead, otherwise he is sick for the next few days 20) being around kids who are sick 21) red dye 22) environmental stuff like the smell of perfume, the smell of paint that is being put on the walls, or new fake leather sofas coming into the home, and those smells from beauty salons (hair stylist shops and spas), new flooring going into the house 23) playing outside in the dirt and getting a rash from the dirt (because the geese, pigeons, ducks, dogs and cats urinate and defecate in the dirt at school in the yard and the kids play in it)... he gets a rash from it...last year he got a rash, got sick with pneumonia and strep, and he had the worse eye movments, mouth movements and shoulder movements that I have ever seen from him...plus...fear of things happened, he started interrupting in class, and his writing went downhill... 24) television is bad news, DS is very bad news, the computer is not good, the video game scene with the wii and the playstation stuff makes things come out it seems

  5. Did you do two kinds of allergy testing? What foods have you taken out of his diet? I find that tv, computer and video games are bad news. I have kept my son away from tv as much as possible, by playing board games and physical games like hockey, with him and talking to him. The DS is the worse! We went to a neurologist, who said that my son had pandas and tics, and said that children increase their tics when watching tv because they are relaxed. I believe that I read somewhere that screen time increases tics because it does something to the brain. The neurologist said that he believes that it is relaxing for them, so they tic more. I just don't do screen time as much as I can. Just to be fair, I don't watch tv, so that my son doesn't say that it isn't fair. We only turn on the tv in the morning see the weather channel and the time on tv just before school... When I went out to a function and left ds with a family member who had him watch tv for the whole 3 hours, I found that ds wanted to shrug his shoulders more. Just want to know what you found helps.
  6. Do pediatrician's test for lyme? Do I just ask for the test? HOw do I ensure that they will do the test? I read somewhere on this forum that someone asked their doctor to test their child, and the doctor said that their state didn't have lyme disease. I live in Ontario Canada.
  7. The pediatrician had ds do a urine test, which came back negative for protein and glucose. Last time that he was on azithromycin for 3 weeks, he had the same symptoms, and had protein in his urine. After doing the first urine test and finding protein, they did a 24 hour test, which is supposed to be the gold standard for protein, and they found nothing. So...for some reason, ds gets foamy urine after being on azithromycin.
  8. Fortunately, kindergarten is optional. The school needs to put that into perspective as well. You can always home school her, if that option is available to your family. You need to be with your daughter, and not worry about the backwards e. You need to connnect with her, and she needs to know her family. There is a good book about children and parents by Gabor Mate called Hold Onto Your Kids, which is about not focussing on the need for peers. It is not about pandas, but it is refreshing to realize that parents should be important in a child's life moreso than peers. Good for you. Take care of your daughter. Spend time with her. I don't find it strange at all...in fact...it is strange when people don't understand that. Some educators are better than others, just like there is good and bad in every profession. Follow your heart. Do what is right for your child. People whose children have been affected by strep, pandas, lyme, or something else, or people whose children get worse with illness, are always on their toes. They are acutely aware of illnesses around them. They are aware of people coughing. They are aware of people sneezing. They are aware of everything to do with illnesses, because they want to keep their kids away from getting them. They want to protect their children. Keep protecting your child.
  9. I'm just wondering if anyone else has a child who ends up having short low grade fevers..often enough to notice...that go away and then return. For example...one day there is a low grade fever, throughout the night too, the next day there really isn't anything when the child wakes up, but at lunch, there is a low grade fever, then after school it is low, then it goes away, then at night the child has a low grade fever, and then it goes away. The following day it isn't there, until the night. Then nothing for one day. What is that kind of stuff?
  10. Hi, My ds7 just started a course of azithromycin. This time, it was the generic brand, because that is what the pharmacist had available. There is no red dye in the generic brand. He started taking it on Friday evening, and on Monday morning (today) he told me that his urine is frothy. I called the doctor, and am waiting for the secretary to call back. Has this happened to anyone?
  11. Yes, I suspected Pandas last year, when he went through something very strange, after an untreated strep infection. But...tics are the big one for him. I have found that when he is sick, as long as I quickly jump in and get him antibiotics, that he will be ok. The tics are minimal (nose squiching). However, this time, I let his on and off fever go for 5 days, giving him natural stuff like garlic and lots of fluids. His old shoulder tic is starting again. I got the antibiotics on the 5th day of his illness. I really hope that it is not too late. Last year was the saddest year in my whole life. He did odd mouth movements, rolled his eyes, shrugged his shoulders every 5 seconds, turned his head to the side, hummed, and was extremely anxious. His handwriting changed. It suddenly became very very messy. He became very irritable too. The teacher called me in to ask what had happened to ds, because he had suddenly changed from being a star student, to a student who was no longer complying. He was constantly chatting in class, interrupting the teacher when she spoke to the class. She said...I don't recognize this student. He has changed. It lasted for 7 months. I fell apart. It ended sometime in the middle of August. In July, I had him on 3 weeks of azithromycin. He really improved. The anxiety was gone. The mouth movements were gone. The talkativeness was gone . The shoulder shrugs were gone. When school started this year, my ds7 won the most improved award because the new teacher was expecting him to be excessively chatty, interrupt, and do his work messy. Instead, she said that he is a great student. She told us that the previous teacher from last year had warned her that he was always talking in class, interrupting her, talking when others were presenting, he drew something on his desk, and he was always turning around to talk to the person behind him. (I suspect that he was turning around, because his head would do that...). She was on alert for his behaviour. This year, he has had some nose squishing whenever he has more snot than usual, he will blink one eye when he is feeling scared about something, he would make this throaty "hhhaaaahhhhh" sound after drinking anything....and he hums just before he is about to eat, and while he is eating...but those seemed so mild by comparison to last year. I have found that as long as I "catch" his fevers, and treat them, he is fine. He gets better. No tics. However, this time is different. My mistake. I let him play after school every day, and I let life get in the way. I should have just taken him to the closest walk in clinic that will give him a 5 day course of antibiotics...right away. I really really pray that will not go through what he went throught last year. His handwriting is also going a bit downhill. I am really scared. Sugar is a big one. The school had gum day and hot dog day recently, which didn't help. In fact, it made everything worse. They are planning on having regular hot dog days, which are really bad for him with all of the nitrates. Should I just keep him away on those days?
  12. No. He wasn't on a multivitamin before all of this started. So you think that the prebiotics, epsom salt and the fact that the cereal has many vitamins are helping? Does it matter whether or not b6 is in the mix? I also notice that when he eats something like an ice cream, I see a little something coming out. Also, when he has a fever, it seems to start. Fortunately, I have been able to get him on azithromycin right away, when he gets a fever. He had a really bad episode last year, after repeated strep infections. Azithromycin helped reduce the tics and the behavioural fears, but it took a while...around one month. I notice that the following are bad news: 1) fever or some kind of sickness 2) ice cream (sugar or the milk?) 3) lack of sleep 4) decongestants 5) pizza from pizza pizza (is it the cheese they use? ) 6) YOP yogurt (probably the dairy and sugar) 7) stress (makes his eye blink, but he doesn't do all of the other things...like one day a neighbour's dad yelled at my son's friend, and my son's eye started blinking like crazy) 8) fish oil I am afraid to give him any multivitamins. I gave him some multivitamins and some other stuff that this alternative health practitioner had prescribed a few years back, and he started having tremors, like seizures. I had kept my child away from msg and all that crap, and surprisingly, in all of those wacky formulas that the alternative health practioner had given him, there was an excessive amount of msg. She prescribed the famous brand that natural doctors prescribe - multivitamins, colloidal multiminerals, and a neuropowder probiotic. The multiminerals and the neuropowder have glutamic acid. My son's system went haywire right after that. I had gone to her for a sinus issue with my son, and he ended up having tremors. So, I am really reluctant to go there with any multi vit.
  13. I went with my son to two neurologists. I also live in Canada. They both responded to my inquiry about pandas. One of the neurologists is a doctor at Sick Kids hospital, and he said that if my son continues to get strep often, then we should consider giving him antibiotics prophelactially (how do you spell that word?) which was surprising to me, since all other doctors have been dismissing pandas altogether. He said that otherwise, my son presents with a tic disorder. The other neurologist is from Trillium, and he said that he only believes that kids should get antibiotics when they have active strep infections. He said that he believes that there have been cases of pandas, but he will only treat active infections. He went over the critera: sudden onset etc. He said that my son has a tic disorder, and not to worry about it, because all kids have quirks. It took a few months to see both neurologists (one 4 months and the other 5 months). Back then, my son's symptoms were really bad. The neurologists asked about school, and I completely forgot that during the time when he suddenly changed, his teacher reported that my son had changed...and what happened to the boy she knew. I told both doctors that he is an excellent student, which he is, except during that time, when he started going downhill with writing, and was always talking to everyone in the class, and even wrote on the desk. Odd things for him. He was also afraid of things then. Anyways...try to remember everything. Because it has been so long, I had forgotten a bunch of stuff, and when I was asked, I only remembered some. After reflecting on both appointments, I realized that I had missed some things. Anyways...they both asked about family history of anxiety tics and ocd, when his tics started, strep infections, and school. They asked if it affects his daily living. They did neurological tests on him. That's about it. They won't push meds in Canada, unless it is severe and is affecting your child's life at school and everywhere else.
  14. Hi, I also posted this information in the tourette/tic forum. I have decided to pass this along onto this forum, because I strongly suspect that my son had pandas along with tics. His strep titers were high, and he was jutting out his jaw, rolling his eyes, looking up, turning his head a lot, shrugging his shoulder a lot, more emotional than usual, his printing wasn't as neat, he went to the bathroom a lot, he became fearful of things, and needed us around all the time suddenly, his teacher actually called us last year to ask us "what happened to Sebastian...he used to be such a great little boy...now all he does is talk in class, interrupt lessons, turn to talk to the person behind him, and his writing skills have gone down." She said that "this is not the same boy who was in my class all year." After a few courses of azithromycin, things subsided. I stopped chocolate, dairy, wheat, and sugar. Sugar seemed to be a big one. He got more sleep too. I also discovered a cereal that seems to really help. Here is the story that I posted on the other site: I just wanted to pass along something that I have found helpful. My child is in grade 2 and had a lot of tics, and reacted severely after having an illness. I now jump and get antibiotics as soon as he has a fever. Plus...I give him Nestle Rice Cereal...the kind that you give the really small babies...the stage one formula that says add water. I found that the original formula really worked well, probably because it is gluten free, with minimal milk, and it has a lot of vitamins. The best formula is the original one, that has the picture of the bear on it, not the one with the baby on it, which is the new formula. The original packaging has a blue teddy bear on it, and the new formula has the word Gerber on it, and the picture of the Gerber baby. They changed the vitamins percentages, and took out B6 out of their formula. He says "I want the baby cereal" and I have instructed him to tell the kids at school that he has "rice cereal" for breakfast. They don't need to know that it is baby cereal. Does anyone think that the mix of vitamins in the infant baby cereal by Nestle (add water) original formula...could be beneficial? It is probably a mix of the following: 1) epsom salt baths 2) Nestle Baby Cereal - Rice - Add Water... every day 3) going to bed early and being rested 4) not doing a lot of activities, and not stressing about school 5) Praying and asking others to pray 6) laying down with my child to comfort him before bedtime and teling him nice stories, because falling asleep alone at night is still a stressful time for him, and hanging out with him, and being aware of what sets him off a little (sleep, hunger, stress, dust) I find that whenever we have early hockey practice at 6 am it seems to be a stressor for him, and he easily gets sick. So, instead, we just rest for the rest of the day. I don't know why he gets one day fevers, but I quickly jump on them by getting a prescription for azithromycin to prevent any of the crazy things that I have seen in the past. God Bless all of our children, and please keep them safe and healthy. Please help us find the right things to help our children, away from harm. Guardian angels, please watch over our children, and keep them safe. Let us parents suffer, and not our children. Eliminate all tics and pandas from this world. I pray for all children and their parents who worry about them. Here is the combination of vitamins. Please feel free to give me your feedback regarding the vitamin breakdown, and let me know if you think that it makes a difference. vitamin a 0% vitamin c0% calcium 15% iron 100% vitamin e 10% thiamine 100% riboflavin 100% niacin 80% vitamin b6 6% biotin 15% vitamin b 12 100% pantothenate 25% iodide 20% magnesium 25% zinc 10% It also says that it has prebiotics. Maybe this is also helpful. Any feedback is appreciated.
