Magnesium supplement.....when did you see changes?
DoriansMom replied to DoriansMom's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
We are using the powder form, not the liquid. I have not seen any improvment, today will be day 3. I said we would use the entire jug and see what happens, if there is no improvment then we wont bother with it any more. Should I be giving him more? I have started out with the 1/2 tsp as reccomended and will move up to the 1tsp over time. -
thank you I am checking out the website right now. One last question for today. Can Lyme disease effect your thinking? at times my son has hit his head with his hand and said "why am I like this, what is wrong with me" I know his train of thought is effected some how and he even knows it himself. Also, he doesn't complain about any sort of pain but he is always tired. Is there any way I can ask him if he is in discomfort without putting those thoughts in his head so he just agrees with me.

Thank you. I think the key thing is to rule everything out. We live in an area where ticks are a big problem. We live in the City and I was shocked when my dog had ticks on him from either a walk or our back yard. I wont be happy with a diagnosis of TS if the doctor doesn't rule everything else out. If everything else has been ruled out I can live with what ever he has. Do you find with PANDAS that things get worse over time? I was just talking with my husband about when we first noticed symptoms and over the past 2 years things have progressivly gotten worse with the motor tics especialy. I don't know if this is normal for TS or PANDAS or both. If anything we can always go see a natural path and pay for private care. Hopefully they can get the tests done that we need. Bridy Hi Kim Thank you for the reply. I am from Winnipeg, Canada, and getting doctors to do tests can be a challange, but my husband and I are presistant. We are on the waiting list to see a Nurologist and the wait is usualy about 2 months or more. In the mean time we figured we would take our son to see our GP to have some blood work done just to rule out any defficancy or what eve else might show up in the blood work. There is no family history of TS. Our younger daughter is 4 and she is the complete opposite child as our son. He has never been a shy little guy but we have noticed over time that his seperation anxiety has increased(I am also a SAHM) and he freaks out at times when I or my husband leave him. He had a horrible time adjusting to Kindergaten and his was peeing up to 30-40 times per day from September till December, then in the spring his urniation went away but he started doing motor and vocal tics to replace that. He is an ok sleeper, he doesn't have a hard time getting to sleep, but only because he is ALWAYS tired. But if he wakes up at 5 to go to the bathroom he will have a hard time getting back to bed. I am pretty sure he has never had any exposure to tics on his body, but I am wondering if mosquito bites should be looked into. Just out of curiosty because of where we live.

We are in the process of trying to figure out what is going on with our son. He is 6 years old and is having vocal and motor tics. He has had both for some time now and his motor tics have changed 1x since we can remember. But since about spring of this year his motor and vocal tics have been the same with him keeping them but adding new motor tics as time goes on. He has a long history of ear infections. His tonsils and adenoids were removed at 3.5 years and he has only had 1 ear infection since then. We are taking him to his GP this week to try and get him to agree to run some tests. doing some blood work to check his minural levels and what ever else we can get checked. Is there any test to check for PANDAS? shoudl I even bring this up with his GP as a possability?

our son had his tonsils and adenoids out at 3.5 years of age. His tonsils and adenoids were massive and he had breathing issues to the point where he would stop breathing at night(it was scary) He never had a positive test for strep but we also had a horrible Ped at the time who ignored our concerns about his tonisl always being red and swollen. He suffered from cronic ear infections and we had about enough and requested some xrays. Sure enough the xrays confirmed our conerns and he had them taken out. His health improved 100% after, and all was going well but within about 6 months after his surgery he started having tics. We didn't realise they were tics until recently, but they have been there and with a lot of reading we have learned that he has had them for a while. His tics change though, so that is why we never even thought he was doing anything to be concerned about. Who knows, he could have had tics before his surgery, but we just can't remember.

You have been given some great advice. I just wanted to stress again that the best thing is to ignore her behaviour. drawing attention to it will only make it worse. She probbaly doesn't even know she is doing it half the time anyway.

I found this Kids Calm http://www.calmnatural.com/kids-natural-calm-liquid-multi-vitamins and is has potassium sorbate and sodium benzoute, two very bad preservatives. I did some more reading on here and found the Natural Vitallity, Natural Calm Kids formula.

does anyone know if there is anything similar to Kids Calm without the preservatives? The product looks great but I am not happy with their preservative choices.

Thank you for all the replies and suggestions. We are expecting the Neurologist to push the drugs, which we want to avoid. But I will keep my fingers crossed that maybe we will get one that isn't so pushy. We also have plans to tell him/her that if he can't help us for him to recommend us to someone who can. Dorian has a long history of health issues. We felt that he wasn't quite "right" as an infant and decided to delay all his vaccinations till he was 6 months. After his vaccinations the only thing we noticed was that day he refused to sleep, other then that nothing has stuck out in our mind. We didn't do prevnar and we live in Canada so I think our vaccination list is a bit shorter then what is suggested in the US? We did MMR at 2 years of age but he was experiencing many reoccurring ear infections about 6 months before that. He suffered from tonsillitis and ear infections a lot and was on antibiotics about 5 times before we decided to have surgery to take his tonsils and adenoids out when he was 3.5 years old. We noticed aggressive motor tics when he was about 4, with him going to the bathroom up to 40 times per day. At that time we had no idea that this was a tic until just recently reading more on tics on the Internet. The urination tic never did go away but always came and went in severity up until the spring of this year. At that point he changed his tic to sniffing and pulling up his pants and both of those have been around since the spring. I have made an appointment with his GP to get some blood work done and to also see if we can get into see an allergy specialist. I am slowly taking out gluten from his diet and hopefully we can get it out completely by the end of next week. We are not big dairy eaters, don't drink milk and Dorian only has about 1 serving of cheese per day. We discovered Daiya cheese, which is amazing btw, you should all try it, It is soy free and gluten free. I am not sure if there is a family history, I never knew my fathers side of the family. My husband has mild OCD but it doesn't effect his life to the point of medication. I am going to try those epsom salts in the bath(if he will take baths) he has been into taking showers lately. The waiting for all these appintments and results is the hardest part. I would love to have a simple answer but I have a feeling things wont be so easy. He has always had a hard time with going to school and has seperation anxiety to top it all off. But once he is there he is fine and his teachers say he is doing very well. we are glad for that because he can be a handfull at home that is for sure! Thank you for letting me vent, I think I will continue to have so many questions along the road.

Hi Everyone I am new to the forum and new to the possability that our son has TS. He has a long history of many issues, he turned 6 in August. We noticed vocal tics almost a year ago, but had no idea it was a "tic". we just thought he was being silly by sniffing all the time and noticed he would do it when he was anxtious or excited. Now that we are reading books on TS we realise that he has had motor tics for quite some time, but again, just thought he was being silly by pulling on his pants. In October we noticed that he was turning his head from side to side and sniffing so I asked him why he does that and he told me that he likes the noises and patterns that it makes. For us that was a huge red flag so we set him up with a PDoc to get her opinion on what he is thinking. Needless to say we were shocked when she suggested TS and suggested who we should see next. We are now doing the waiting game to see a Nurolagist and it can be about a 3-6 month wait. I was wondering if anyone can share with me what to expect when we meet with the Dr. will he right away want to prescribe drugs or are they usualy open to alternatives? I was hopeing that they would do an allergy test or rule out everything else. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. oh, and does anyone's little one get really red ears by the end of the day? My son has always been getting really red ears when he is tired for as long as we can remember. We have started taking him to a chiro but my husband isnt convinced, any thoughts on that?

how many kids took flu shot in our forum
DoriansMom replied to lele's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
This is a presonal choice and I am not giving any advice but I will tell you our story. neither of our children have ever had the flu shot, but neither of them have any health conditions that we feel they might benefit from it. When our son turned 6 he was due for his boosters(we delayed all vaccinations as a baby and he wasn't due till this past summer) We chose not to give him any boosters. At that time he was only displaying vocal tics and not motor tics, his motor tics didn't start till this month.
