  1. I understand your frustration... My son has severe autism, no speech, very little understanding of speech since age 18 months...thanks to vaccines... He began having very severe, alarming tics in his teens. I had no clue what was going on and he couldn't tell me. Now he is 26 and many therapies, treatments, etc. are not available to him since he is an 'adult'... Completely unfair... I have recently Joined fb group Natural care for tics and Tourette's ... Recommended! Trust me, you will learn more from others via these fb groups than from some of the so-called experts. I have learned this through the last 26 years searching for ways to get my son his 'life' back. Good luck in your journey.... I know these tics and OCD can be completely life controlling... :-(. Hope to see you in the fb group!
  2. My son is 26, has no speech or much understanding of speech..severe 'autism' since 18 months... Began having very severe, sometimes very alarming tics and life controlling OCD in his teens. Before that he was making slow, steady progress. All progress stopped when the tics began 10-15 years ago. He has had many different extreme tics through the years, currently constant spitting, extreme OCD, impulsivity and prompt dependence. I have just learned of a plant that apparently is helping many tic sufferers... Look up 'Joyle' , who is a member of this group. I Also just joined the fb group she recommends, Natural care for tics and Tourette's. Pharmaceuticals have only worsened my sons condition... Also dental procedures seemed to have aggravated ...

  4. NO! My son is 19, has severe Autism/No speech/ severe Tourettes. I have done a lot of research over the years and as a result all of my kids have been vaccine exempt since 2001...a little too late, but at least the shots can't hurt them any more than they already have. My kids and I have NEVER had a flu shot and we very RARELY get sick at all. I have heard too many stories of people having reactions/ getting the flu from the shot, etc. etc. AND the flu shot impairs your immune system....all they are doing is screwing up our body's ability to keep itself healthy...God's plan.
  5. My son is 19, diagnosed w/severe autism at 18 months, lost all speech at age 3, diagnosed with severe Tourettes in 2007. I have beeen giving him supplements since age 5, and have completely sworn off meds when I figured out his prompt dependentness and tourettes started when he was on Risperdal. I have always given him adult nutritional supplements as childrens' were not available when he was little. I just give smaller doses. I figure the drugs do more harm than "too Much" of a vitamin or other natural supplement. I have recently begun my son on Accupuncture which seems to be helping him. He has been tic-ing almost constantly day and night for the last few months. Barometric pressure seems to be a huge trigger for him and our weather here has been changing alot since hurricane season ended. I HIGHLY recommmend Sheila's book "Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourettes."
  6. My 19 year old son with severe autism/Tourettes and no speech has recently begun tic-ing almost constantly, preventing sleep many nights. It helps if I lay next to him with my arms and legs across him. One of his most unnerving tics(especially while I am driving) is a "touch tic" He must touch my hand, or put his hands in front of me. I find that if I leave one hand free for him to hold with both of his hands...he is able to control his tics. His tic where his mouth snaps open forcefully seemingly cannot be released until someone touches him. He also literally climbs the wall from his bed all hours of the night. When he has the mouth snapping open forcefully tic he gets very upset if someone does not touch him to release the tic. He has other tics as well. Has anyone else had any experience with this or does anyone have any insight? He is on ALL natural treatments(Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourettes has been a Godsend) including accupuncture most recently which seems to be helping somewhat. Autism was bad enough, but I now find myself realizing that I did not know how good I had it with just Autism. At least the he was making slow steady progress, now ...stuck. Any input highly appreciated. Please email me directly. I am not able to get online much except to clean out my inbox. Thanks, Lindy/PaulsMom reverseautism@yahoo.com
  7. Hi, I am a single mom to 3 "children", Elizabeth, soon to be 22; Jessica and Paul, soon to be 20. Paul became severely autistic at age 18 months and was diagnosed with severe Tourette Syndrome in 2007. I now wish he were only autistic, as TS disrupts every aspect of his life.

  8. Hi Krista, My son is 18, non-verbal, Autistic , OCD, prompt dependent, and has developed very severe tics in the last couple of years as well. GABA and Glycine were also suggested by his Autism specialist in addition to the Taurine and Magnesium. I have also discovered that MSM, vitamin E and zinc seem to help as well. He also must hold my hands to "ground" himself(I guess) he does not tic near as much when he is holding someones hands. Deep pressure and joint compression also help as well as scalp massage. Well my "kid" is asleep(first night before 2AM in 10 days)...so I am going to take advantage of this and get some shut eye myself!! Good night and may God bless! Lindy as well
  9. Melanie, No, you did not offend me in any way...I want you to know also that you are not alone. You are a good mom to keep fighting for your son, I am there in the trenches with you. Have you tried Magnesium or GABA to help your son calm? I have given my son up to 2000Mg daily of Mg and 600 Mg GABA. I am now spraying with Magnesium Chloride as well. My son has reacted to most meds he has had and I have opted to avoid them. His main treatment now is Heilkunst www.heilkunst.com The first time he was on Risperdal in 2005 there were no changes good or bad. In 2007 he became EXTREMELY lethargic and I took him off it. This is when the tics became extremely obvious, preventing sleep. That is why I was upset that the NEUrologist looked at me like I was nuts when I told him his tics started when he was on Risperdal. These docs need to understand that we moms of Autistic kids know our kids better than ANYONE else, including the so-called experts. Peace and Hugs, Lindy Hi I have a simular situation with my son Hes 15 and has TS and ASD what a nightmare we have tried everything meds supplements diets etc some worked some didnt. I have him on Risperdal now because his behavior was so bad we didnt know what to do Hes a great kid who was suffering he curses and has some motor tics I hate using meds but for now its what we are going to do I know the choices are hard but your son is 18 and can make legal decisions Good luck melanie Hi I hope I didnt offend you I know how hard autism and tourettes is believe me . I dont like using meds at all I hate it but It helped danny not get so angry to where we were looking for placement. He is much less angry now and able to do so many more things .I am using risperdal and it does have side effects but they all do.But so does staying in a home locked away because he was so angry.I was very thrilled when he first started the med not so much now it doesnt seem to be working he seems frusterated and very anxious I get the same way when hes like this were going away for a few days I think its also that he is at sleep away and were picking him up today. I know they are going to tell me he was cursing and angry I dont want to hear it . I am so confused 1/2 of the time .torn about what to do next The tics are so obvious cursing and he has a walking tic he stopps and kindof cracks his feet. Maybe that came from the meds? His neuro said he should increase the dose and it should help Hes on 1 mg a day risprerdal maybe ill increase it to see if it helps since i can keep a good eye on him all week Just know your not alone and theres lots of us out here that will listen when your tired. Im scared for him I want this to go away I hate tourettes I hate autism but I love Danny so Ill keep tring Melanie
  10. Melanie, Ummm... My son is NOT at all able to make his own decisions. Yes he is 18, but he is severely disabled with Autism/Tourettes(profoundly cognitively disabled)...no speech, so academic skills, no math, no reading, no writing or freehand printing, nothing...he can sort of trace letters, no personal care skills, no knowledge of danger, must be supervised 24/7...I must shower him, brush his teeth and hair, shave him, etc...There is lots more I must do for him, but I have been doing it for 16 years these things I do without thinking any more. He is VERY cognitively disabled. He has always been in a self contained classroom. and is in a functional skills classroom where he shreds paper, folds clothes, cleans tables, etc. Or just sits there, tic-ing because he is so bored. He spends his time throwing stones, clothes, shoes, toys, videos, cups, dishes, whatever he has in his hot little hands onto the neighborhood rooftops and over the house or fences. He rocks back and forth in the driveway looking at the trees, sits in the bed of my truck, jumps into the air and then onto the ground, jumps over bird baths, dog jumps, fences, etc., throws the dogs over dog jumps, bird baths, fences, etc. jumps and pulls himself up on the basketball hoop, dangles beads over other items, or just sits in the dry bath tub for hours. I want so much more for him, but that cannot happen until I can find the keys to unlock him. Physically he looks like any other kid, but cognitively he is VERY disabled. He will NOT be making any decisions any time soon. He depends TOTALLY on me...I am the Lone Ranger.........single mom, and not getting younger. 12. Hi, Abbe, First of all I want to say that I would absolutely trust your doctors decision on the homeopathic remedies. They are non-invasive. My son is on Heilkunst which is like sequential homeopathy with an extra "twist." Paul has had many healing reactions in the last couple of years and yes they can be frustrating, but the benefits outweigh the frustration 10:1. Paul is 18, severely Autistic and now in the last 2 years has developed severe Tourettes as well. Your post caught my attention bc I have suspected food allergies in him for many years, but afraid he will be allergic to EVERYTHING and I can't afford to buy his GF-CF foods as it is. BUT...I think it is time, since I saw in Sheila's book that food allergies can also be at the root of his Tourettes, which is more debilitating than his Autism at times. He used to be able to focus for several minutes...now? seconds if he's lucky. I am so glad you posted abt the mycoplasma infection as well...something to look into! Lindy Just wanted to update in the event that this information proves helpful. I took Nick to his Dr. yesterday. He tested him for all the food group allergies. The most significant thing was he IS allergic to SOY and BEEF. He has been getting soy yogurt twice per day (suppleemnts in there) and he loves meat. The other thing the doctor told me was he had a mycoplasma infection. He said that when you have this infection it can cross the blood brain barrier and cause neuro. symptoms. He said you can get the infection in your lungs but also you can get it through immunizations. He said there was a conference he went to as to why the victims of the gulf war got so sick. Well before they left for the war they were given like 10 immunizations. When the shots were tested they were found to have this mycoplasma virus. so he put Nicholas on a homeopathic series of vials that he has to take 10 of them every third day. I gave him the first last night and I was so nervous I would see a reaction. So far so good. The box says between the 2nd and fourth doses symptoms can worsen which is a part of the healing process. I am nervous but feel like I need to trust the doctor at this point. abbe
  13. Ok...My son is 18, fell into Autism quickly after shots at 18 months. was diagnosed at 22 months, lost all speech after a tetanus shot at age 3. Paul had been making slow, steady progress through age 13 or so...when he became extremely prompt dependent(still is) and began having some pretty crazy tics in 2007, sometimes they are almost constant, and all night, tensing and jerking all muscles in his body throwing his head back, grabbing his shoulder and crouching onto the floor with WIDE open mouth, etc....many sleepless nights. This has been going on roller coaster like for about 2 years. I finally gave in and took him to a Neurologist. He said it was quite obviously Tourettes and that he doesn't usually prescribe 2 meds but in his case he would. The meds are Risperdal and Paxil. I explained the he had been on Risperdal and that is when his tics began. I did not tell him that I researched anti-psychotics and found that Tic disorders(Tardive Dyskinesia) is a possible permanent side effect of Risperdal. I mainly wanted a Diagnosis for Medwaiver and school purposes... that he would not give bc he said that is is part of Autism...? I had never heard such a thing. He REALLY wanted to sell those meds! I almost went back to agree to the meds just to get the DX...I am calling again today to try to get him to write something for his school bc they all say he does it for attention and apparently treat him with "less than respect" when he is tic-ing. His teacher thinks he is doing it for attention and tells others to IGNORE him. All he needs is a touch and he can gain control...they won't do it and he starts trembling, sweating and gets very red in the face...at times his heart skips beats.. I assume because of the tension and anxiety..any thoughts? I do have Sheila's book and am eternally grateful . before this book I could find NOTHING on treatments but meds...not going there...Lindy
