Fixit Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Any thoughts? http://www.snoringcenter.com/ One of the news show did a segment on this procedure called Laser Tonsil Ablation done in this clinic. It is an alternative to t&a surgery. This was a couple of years ago and I was considering it for my son because the recovery time is short. This clinic did not take insurance but I'm sure there are other doctors who do this procedure by now and maybe able to get insurance to pay for it. This is my 2 cents: If your child has an immune problem then t&a will not prevent strep throat but it can help prevent colonization. I think abx before and after t&a is necessary just like with dental work. thanks will have to look into it...just changed ins..said we are 6 months out from such procedures...long story...so while i get the paperwork in order and their info corrected...i'll have time to check it out...
Fixit Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 I had my T&A surgery as an adult (21 y.o.) Dr. T found it significant that I had chronic pharyngitis and needed that procedure into adulthood. He said it was an indicator. are you a.o.k.??
matis_mom Posted September 3, 2010 Author Report Posted September 3, 2010 Anesthesia can cause more probs than just PANDAS flares- it can trigger Bipolar too if you are genetically predisposed, as well as a myriad of other ill effects because of the chemicals. Wow! Thanks for the warning! There is bipolar in my family, and I've never had anestesia so it would be a big deal for me. I wasn't thinking of it as a way to not get strep, but rather help clear the current infection (which I don't think I've clear) I'm going to the doctor tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks all for the input.
Fixit Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Both of my pandas kids had their tonsils out, both were large and juicy. One's tonsils had appeared unremarkable prior to T&A. It did cause a pandas flare in one of them. If your child is doing well, trending positive- I would not rock the boat . If your child isn't doing well, and you are considering pex or ivig- I would absolutely have the tonsils done first. I would get strong abx prior, iv abx during, and high dose abx for at least 2 weeks post. I would also have an Rx for a 30 day taper of prednisone on hand. well that's the thing..it's ungelateing(sp) right now..i don't know which way it's going ..yesterday i was ready to do ta..things were b-ad. today alot better.....literally such a change one day to the next... so if i do want the big guns...i want to not second guess the ta, and then have to wait longer.... AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! now dh we are no where close on him..this is only 2nd week new job....but i would like him to see doc L or B to get their thoughts on him particularly....!!!!

Dr. T found it significant that I had chronic pharyngitis and needed that procedure into adulthood. He said it was an indicator. are you a.o.k.?? Yes, it greatly reduced any pharyngeal illness; sore throat, swollen glands ect. As an adult, it took 3 weeks to recover, I lost 15 lbs (which I had to loose It seems ENT are very reluctant to pull them out now. We all have them out on both my side and my husband"s.
mom md Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 I had mine out last year...I consider myself tough but it was way worse than I predicted. At day 12 post-op I had to quit taking pain meds because I needed to go back to work but I needed them for several days more. The ENT told me one of the reasons they hate doing adults is the reimbursment is awlful. Most adult patients are incredibly high maintenance post-op and often have to be re-admitted for pain control. He said definitely not worth all the effort. Bad medicine I know but at least he was honest.

MOm,,,did you have your's cultured... in the long run, are you glad you had yours out? dh still gets strep..as i've said before...so i wonder if it would be worth it for him??? now for ds...he is still young..and a pandas kid...so is it something to do now to hopefully help clear remaining pandas symptoms..and a healthier future...no pos culture in 3yearsish...but upon presentation,.docs would say...yah with his strep history and that throat lets do abx...and we would get complete remission(so maybe some other bacteria...this last onset..the one we are still working on 1 1/2 years..was myco p...... his glands were swollen the day before didn't feel well..but also hight of allergy season
