sptcmom Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 (edited) DS8 is currently 11 weeks post IVIG, got over two strep exposurs at camp and still has two loose teeth. 7 days ago he started complaining of left leg pains mild which resolved with motrin once a day since then. We had 14 vials of blood drawn last friday for retest, Igenex etc. Monday night he had poor sleep with restless legs, muscle twitches. Yesterday midafternoon severe leg pain mostly muscles in his left leg, walks with a bad limp, knee is hyperextended, muscle tone looks low in left leg only. DS also complains of occasional chest pain last few days. I emailed Dr K. He said to do short term iron supplements and see what happens. DS has been on Augmentin 600 ES Twice a day for 20 days now. Is it still possible to get Rheumatic fever? He did have exposure at camp , twins with strep and I pulled him out within two days when I found out. This was July 21st. His symptom rampup from the exopsure halted early last week and he then got the leg pains and chest pains( occasional). Any thoughts? Thanks so very much- Jodie Edited August 10, 2010 by sptcmom

Thanks so very much- Jodie Jodie - i hate to ask you the question du jour... but has he been tested for lyme (Igenex tested)? I, too, am reading "cure unkown"... everyone on this forum should read it. It has been an eye opener. If someone has an underlying lyme issue, the IVIG improvements will likely be temporary until the lyme is cleared... and clearing lyme requires different antibiotics than we typically use for our kids. I'm not sure how long you need to wait post IVIG for igenex test... but you must be getting close at 11 weeks.
PacificMama Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 Sounds like you did the draw for Igenex -- so hopefully you will have some answers soon regarding lyme. Leg pain -- and chest pain -- are indicative of lyme infection. My daughter -- who had lyme -- suffered greatly from a sort of a restless leg syndrome pain. It was really terrible, and caused a great deal of distress at night. As soon as I started supplementing with magnesium, this went away completely and never returned. Lyme can deplete magnesium stores, and so it is important to do some supplementing. I used Kids Calm mag, and it helped almost immediately. But also generally, lots of kids and adults are deficient in magnesium, and would benefit greatly by supplementing. It's wonderful for calming down the neuro-system.

Yes, I sent the blood out yesterday to Igenex. Now the wait is agonizing. I hadn't heard of Igenex prior to IVIG and ofcourse all his multiple Quest Western Blots were negative. Arrgghh! Dr Jones told me to start him on Zith 100mgs twice a day. I think I will go ahead. Seeing Dr Jones on Aug 25th thank GOD!! Now MAGNESIUM- I have the baby calm BUT doesn't magnesium interfere with antibiotic absorption? Thanks so much Edited August 10, 2010 by sptcmom
kimballot Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 Jodie - Ok... It was early in the morning.. Guess I did not read your post well before I offered my lame comment! Glad you did the Jgenex draw. We will be doing it soon. All the best to you- hope this resolves soon! sptcmom Posted August 10, 2010 Author Report Posted August 10, 2010 Thanks Kim. BTW do you know about the magnesium not being good for ABX connection? I'm confused totally about it. Jodie
kimballot Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 Thanks Kim. BTW do you know about the magnesium not being good for ABX connection? I'm confused totally about it. Jodie Jodie - I am not aware of the magnesium / ABX problems. We have been using calcium-magnesium supplements for several years. I don't recall hearing about a problem with ABX before. Let me know if you hear more, or perhaps others will chime in here!

Kim DH just emailed me this one http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/magnesium-000968.htm Now Augmentin liquid contains magnesium stearate as an inactive ingredient. Its supposed to act as a medicine lubricant of sorts. Go figure.....
PacificMama Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 It's very important to supplement with magnesium if one is dealing with lyme (and likely helpful even if w/o lyme). Google "lyme magnesium" and you will see the connection. If you are giving abx 2x daily, simply give the magnesium in the middle of the day and do not worry about interference with abx. This issue has come up before on the lyme boards. I usually followed the dosage as recommended by Kids Calm directions. As I said, it was almost miraculous how quickly the restless legs/pain issue resolved. I would count magnesium as one of the single most important things we gave/give our daughter (and now we all take it!). Mary

Personal experience beats everything else. That makes so much sense. I will do that. Am going out to get Kids Calm in about an hour. Jodie

Thanks so very much- Jodie Leg pain is associated with several confections of Lyme. Where is the pain? Is it in the calf or thigh? Calf is indicative ofbartonella and thigh cramps indicative of babesia. Sleep problems are also common with Lyme.

Calf is indicative ofbartonella and thigh cramps indicative of babesia. Sleep problems are also common with Lyme. Hi DS has had limps, thigh muscle pains both legs, calf muscle spasms right leg, muscle weakness both legs, muscle atrophy left quadriceps.Very twitchy at night, muscles going all over the place. This started March 2009 and relapsing and remitting course every 6 to 8 weeks. Then he had a full blown classic PANDAS episode this March 31st 2010. I am waiting for my Igenex. I tested for everything. I am very nervous but do know I need to get to the bottom of this. Just got Ferritin results back and its VERY VERY low. Dr K said to go ahead and supplement with iron for short term. Jodie
