lookingforanweres
Hi All, I am new to this forum so please excuse any mistakes I may make in posting. I am looking for advice on my 22 y/o son who has vocal grunts. They started when he was about 8 y/o, then for some reason stopped. At the time, we didn't think much of them because he had no other symptoms. Then when he hit puberty (with a severe case of acne), he began to have tics where he was head jerking and eye shifting. The tics were not severe, but as a mom, I noticed them and he was aware of them. As he grew older, much of these symptoms disappeared, but the vocal grunts have increased. I believe they are stress/fatigued related but have never had a physician diagnose them as Tourette's. Partly because they did not interfer with his other activities and I didn't want to have a "label" put on him. Anyway, I recently came across Bonnie Grimaldi's supplements and ordered them (except for the magnesium). Will it be ok to give him these supplements without any blood testing. He doesn't go to the doctor often. He is actually in very good health.
CSP
Welcome murms, I'm sure most of us have given Bonnie's supplements with out even talking to a dr. I did when my son was 12/13yo and the supplement made his vocals worse. It is not only Bonnie's supplements that make my son's vocals worse, just about most things I have tried have made them bad. His tic is vocals so that is the one most often we see the increase in. I'm so sorry he is dealing with this at 22yo we all have hopes our children will outgrow most of the tics. Is this the first time he has ever taken anything for the tics? How about diet, have you all tried diet changes? Is your son in college, or is he working? Just wondering what is causing the stress? Chemar
Hi and welcome some people do great on Bonnie's supps...tho some just dont handle them so it is trial and error. They really are very helpful if tolerated. I based my son's supps on her program, but tweaked to fit his specific needs....see link in my signature below we found L-carnitine, and amino acid, very helpful for vocal tics, and magnesium by far the most beneficial supp for tics in general

CP Yes, this is really the first time we have tried anything for the tics. I imagine his tics are not really noticable to most people, just he and I, so we haven't gotten really serious about controlling them. We have discussed dietary changes; he is not really wanting to to this, although I think he may give the gluten free diet a try for a while. He is really skeptical that anything will work. He is in his last year of college and does extremely well except the stress of college life and some conflicts involved have increased his tics this past year. It does seem to me that stress and fatigue are his main tic triggers.
