I tried to do a search on this topic (on this forum), but didn't get anything. Does anyone have a good website they can recommend to learn more about red dye? We suspect our ds has an allergy, but not sure.

if you do a search on the TS/ tics forum you will get more info. search red 40 as that is the most common form of red food dye used

also just do a search on google for the words " red 40 adverse "and you will be amazed what comes up

no wonder it is banned in the UK and Canada!! and there are calls to the FDA to ban it in the US also, tho that will likely fall on deaf ears yet again

http://en.wikipedia....i/Allura_Red_AC

I dont think it is healthy for anyone but it seems kids with neurological problems have a very negative reaction to it

it is by far one of my son's worst triggers for tics & OCD

the other food dyes are also not good, but red 40 ranks top of the bad heap IMHO

DD14 has been doing great in her healing process since having a severe exacerbation in the spring and ending up in the hospital for two weeks. Still, I was finding that she was escalating in her mood dysregulation and raging towards the end of each week. The first thing that came to mind was red or blue dye, which has always sent her into orbit. But I have always been so careful to keep dyes and additives out of her diet since she was 2. In fact, it was written into her IEP that she could not have anything at school with dye in it.

One day at the end of the school year DD came home with very psychotic-like behavior. She was very abusive towards me and ranted on for about 30 minutes how I should let her eat food with dye in it if she wanted it and she promised me she would be able to control her behavior (ha!). Two hours later after she calmed down she fessed up that a friend had given her some M&Ms that afternoon. She realized how crazy the dyes made her and promised to be really careful in the future. Three weeks later she ate a few white marshmallows thinking they were dye free and that night she was off the wall again. I looked at the bag and sure enough there was blue dye in it.

But she was still having problems at the end of the week. I could not find the culprit. Then two weeks ago I was picking up her Vitamin D 50,000 IU prescription from the pharmacy. She had been taking it once weekly on Thursdays since the end of April. I asked the pharmacist to check the ingredients and sure enough, there was blue dye in the gelcaps. I must now get it compounded since you cannot get Vitamin D 50,000 IUs without dye in it.

I truly think the pharmaceuticals are putting dye into medication so they can sell more anti-psychotics!!! In my opinion, dyes should be the first thing that should be eliminated from the diet of anyone with immune, neurologic, metabolic, or GI issues. In fact, it should be eliminated from everyone's food.

Funny you mention marshmallows. Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy when I mention the blue dye. My husband explained it makes the white, whiter. So, when I make Rice Krisie Treats, we but Walmart generic marshmallows....no dye in it.

I am disgusted how aspartame is in so many children's vitamins. Next time you go to the store, look at them. The majority has it.
