The vet did a mouth swab and it was + for Strep B for our dog "Bolt"He was still a puppy and he would lick my daughters face.We have another dog "Sugar"so we treated both of them for 20 days of Amoxicillin. Then waited about 2 weeks and re-checked them both and negative for Strep.Ask the vet to do a throat culture and sensitivity,it will tell you if anything is growing and what medications would treat it!

Welcome!

Here's a recent thread on Augmentin ES vs XR http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8984&start=0&p=74841&hl="augmentin%20es"&fromsearch=1entry74841

Azithromycin was a better antibiotic for us (than Augmentin--but that was over 2 years ago, and we didn't do the high Saving Sammy doses). My dd has been on Azith. 250mg/day for over 2 years (started when she was 43 pounds, now is 62). Last year, when we tried to go down to 125mg/day we noticed symptoms increasing. So, whatever antibiotic is used, dose is also important.

The most popular abs on this forum are Augmentin (usually xr) and Azithromycin.

Re dogs: many find it easier/cheaper to just put the dogs on antibiotics (vs. testing).

Also helpful is child's weight (mine - 53 lbs). Got strep 6th time in 7 months, last time tested positive Monday, 7/12/10 - I brought him in after a "behavior spike" w/ no medical symptoms (ie sore thraot, headache, etc). Blew my mind. Aside, gettig whole family tested again, so far I am negative on throat and nasal area. Even going to test dog. (Strange, has anyone done THAT and where the heck do they swab a dog?)

Me again...

Here's an old thread on dogs: http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8172&start=0&p=67099&hl=+kaplan%20+dogs%20+strep&fromsearch=1entry67099

I'm wondering if your child has had strep 6 times in 7mo. if this is the same infection that is not actually getting cleared, or if your son is indeed clearing, and he is getting a new infection each time?

If he is indeed a difficult to clear carrier, then Azithromycin and/or Clindamycin (WARNING--liquid version of clindamycin tastes BAD) are supposed to be good ones.

Is your son in school?

Have you been changing toothpaste and toothbrushes each time (a few days into the antibiotics)?

Has your son had an immune work-up?

Here are some threads that might be helpful:

Hi - if your kids need to take clindamycin, get the dr to rx cleocin.

According to our dr it is the best tasting one (after much trial and error) and my dd7 says it wasn't too bad and my ds2, who spits the nasty ones out, was willing to swallow it if I promised him an M&M at the end. And only 1 M&M so it couldn't have been too bad if I could bargain so cheaply. It does still smell gross tho'

omg...Cleocin was the one we had! We couldn't get younger sister (5 at the time) to take it. We somehow got her to take the first dose. The second dose was an hour of tears b-4 we got it in. That's when we switched to Azith. which cleared her carrier state.

We could only give 2 doses of liquid clindamycin. It was horrible trying to get her to take it. The pharmacist gave us capsules instead, and we carefully opened them onto a spoon with a slight covering of chocolate pudding, and then would dollop pudding on top...we gave a regular spoonful of pudding, then the one with medicine, and then we followed with another spoonful of just pudding

My son took clyndamycin at age 7 for 10 days after 7 positive rapids/cultures in one year. We emptied the caps and put the nasty nasty powder into a spoonful of Hershey's chocolate syrup. Then we paid him a dollar. Since he had to take it 3 times a day, he ended up with 30 dollars and a trip to the toy store. Oh...and FINALLY a negative strep test...

EAMom - I hate to think wot the other clindamycins are like 'cos our dr swears this is as good as that stuff gets...next time we have to have it, I'll pay my ds with more M&Ms.. he deserves them :)

slighly off topic but in the vein of wot we bribe/offer our kids....

during a recent exacerbation my dd's fear of spiders hadincreased and when one walked across her pillow at bedtime one night, she totally freaked and wouldn't stop. refused to get back in bed, wouldn't sleep in the room, "more may come" etc. So, I bet her that she wouldn't have another spider walk across her pillow before she was 12 (7 now). If it did I promised her (very rashly but I was panicking myself at this point as bed and sleep are sore spots on our household, as they are in many of yours, and I am desperate to hold on to the little space, peace and sleep that I do get) that I'd give her 100 bucks to spend on toys. Well bugger me if 2 spiders didn't run across her bed about 4 weeks later the same night about 5 minutes apart! I had to cough up or she'd never trust me again. She slept that night, baby continued to sleep but it cost me dearly :o

I can so relate...we used to pay our younger dd on a per dose basis as well! I don't remember if it was that much though. She also got paid/bribed for throat cultures.

I hope you didn't have to pay per spider! Wonder how she got those spiders to do that?
