Question regarding vitamins

I know many of your are very knowledgable about using vitamins and supplements, so I have a question for you. My husband has TS, but it is so mild most people never notice. We are not needing supplements to help with his tics. The problem is that he is very edgy, easily stressed over issues which shouldn't stress him and quick tempered. He has said that he feels tense inside most of the time. I believe that he is deficient in some type of vitamin(s). I am just not sure where to start. I also have a son with TS/ADD who is currently taking Bonnie's vitamins and doing very well. I don't think my husband needs everything that my son is getting in Bonnie's vitamins, plus I can't afford to buy enough of Bonnie's for both of them. Do any of you have some suggestions on what my husband should try to take off the edginess and tension?

Layne,

He sounds like the perfect candidate for the at-home Pyroluria test for $40. You need a dr's name, but not his signature--so you can order it yourself. She will send the results back to you directly, plus your doctor (you can explain to them later--easier than getting permission).

The symptoms are difficulty handling stress and quick to temper, and it is also highly associated with this spectrum of neurological disorders.

If he has this, then the treatment is B6 and zinc. Of course other specific deficiencies can cause irritability, such as magnesium and calcium.

You don't need pyroluria to have a B6 deficiency. My husband and I both have one, and no pyroluria.

Hi Layne and welcome

GABA is very good for anxiety and "edginess"

anxiety and edginess can be brought on by many different conditions, and although I certainly would also recommend finding out whether pyroluria is impacting your husband and son, yet my son had no sign of pyroluria but VERY high edginess and anxiety before he started on the supplements.

I feel that his calcium/magnesium/zinc combo helps both his tics and his anxieties, but he is on a full regimin of supps so they most likely work together to bring about the overall effect.

He doesnt take the GABA every day now, only if anxiety is up.

Claire and Chemar,

Thank you very much for the information. I am glad you told me that we can order the pyroluria test without a doctor's signature. I am definitely going to do that for my husband and son. You both have been a wonderful source of information and inspiration for all of us. Thank you very much for spreading the wealth (of information)!

Hi Layne,

Just wondering if your husband drinks anything with caffeine in it. I used to be a caffeine junkie and would have 2 - 3 Cokes a day and was very edgy, stressed out and ill-tempered. My doctor said something like he needs to change my sympathetic nervous system through diet (not eating things I was allergic to) and getting off the caffeine.

Without a doubt, becoming caffeine free has been the one thing that has changed me the most dramatically.

If he's a "user" (!) you might want to suggest he stop and see if he feels better. ( I sure did and I slept better than I had in years, which also affected my ability during the day to handle simple stressors.

Just a thought,

Lulu

Lulu,

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think it is the caffeine because he doesn't drink much coffee, tea or soda. He drinks alot of water and usually has a couple of beers in the evening :o He says the beer helps him relax from the tension he builds up during the day. Don't get me wrong, he's not an alcoholic by any means, I just think he could relax better (and be more healthy) with the correct combination of vitamins. I probably have more to benefit from caffeine elimination than he does!

Thanks,

Layne
