Rowens1214 Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 HI all, my 15 year old son has been on Keflex (1000 2 x daily) while we are waiting to get the Cunninghmam test done and then move on to IVIG. He was doing pretty good with his OCD, tic anxiety etc. His dr decided to put him on amox-clav (augmentin 500mg per day) Its been 7 days and his anxiety, OCD ( Very bad violent thoughts) are creeping back in. Can a change in the antibiotic create such a change in symptons so fast? I have plenty of keflex on hand and think i should switch him back over the weekend and then call our Dr on Monday. Any thoughts on this.
MomWithOCDSon Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 I would think either a switch or a too-low dose of any antibiotic could result in the behaviors creeping back in. That has certainly been our experience. Our DS13 does not seem to respond to 500 mg. Augmentin (or amox-clav) in any positive way. Anything lower than 875 mg. twice daily results in a significant increase in his OCD behaviors, and even this level has not proven to be ideal for him. He is at his best while taking the 1,000 mg. Augmentin XR, the time-release formulation of the amox-clav "marriage." Why, we don't know. But it's proven out time and again as we've tried reducing his dosage and/or even stopping it altogether.
peglem Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 Also, augmentin is famous for causing yeast problems.
Kay Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 We saw this happen with the anxiety come back again very strong when on augmentin 500 2x a day. We previous had been on augmentin 875 2 x day and doctor reduced it after 1 month on the 875 which we had incredible success with. Once she started the 500 mg 2 x day augmentin about the 2nd day she began to have pretty bad anxiety about 2 hours after each dose, inbetween she was fine but at the approx 2 hour mark the anxiety would come and last about 1 hour or so and then she would be fine till taking the next dose. She was put back on augmentin 875 after about 5 days but her stomach did not seem to be able to tolerate it well...she was then switched to Omnicef 300 2 x day which has been good all around. Hope this helps. HI all, my 15 year old son has been on Keflex (1000 2 x daily) while we are waiting to get the Cunninghmam test done and then move on to IVIG. Kay Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 We really don't know the cause, we asked the doctor but he really didn't have an answer for it. This is just my idea and nothing to back it up but I was thinking just being on the antibiotic was stirring things up but it wasn't enough to take care of what was coming to the surface...again just my thought no doctor in on that one. she began to have pretty bad anxiety about 2 hours after each dose, inbetween she was fine but at the approx 2 hour mark the anxiety would come and last about 1 hour or so and then she would be fine till taking the next dose. kay - very interesting. do you have any thoughts on why that happened like that?
