Can someone explain what the Chorea fingers look like- I have noticed the past few days when look at my son it seems that his fingers are bent. He often brings them to his mouth but when he is "relaxed" they are bent not straight.....is this Chorea?

Sorry I am asking so many questions-I am just feeling like I don't know anything and am overly paranoid about everything lately.

Thanks

Chorea typically refers to writhing motions.

In terms of choreiform movements, these refer to fine piano playing movements when a child is put in a stressed stance with arms extended, eyes closed and tongue exposed. More info can be found here http://books.google.com/books?id=l9wtYZ_iC...ed=0CCAQ6AEwBw#

Brandy - Curled fingers are seen in other neurological conditions. Is he able to open his fingers when he is doing things? Is it only at rest? Is there any small tremors when he is relaxing?

I would try to videotape it when he is not looking (he will not act naturally if he knows you are watching), and then I would consult with a physician. I don't remember - are you working with a PANDAS doc?

My daughter is doing the same thing now-she bends her little fingers on each hand simultaneously and then usually brings them to her mouth or down past her mouth (looks like she's swatting bugs). This is a new developement for her and I've been wondering what it is a tic, a compulsion or choreiform mov't. This is happening with increased frequency over the last few days despite ABX daily.

Kimballot-

When this bumped up I realized I never answered- He can hold them straight- this is just something I think he is compelled to do...as I said yesterday- I think I can officially say we have OCD issues now...dear God help!

Brandy - I see from your other posts that you have discovered many things about your son since this finger positioning started. It sounds like you have an appointment coming up with Dr. K and I am hopeful that he will be able to put everything together for you. I look forward to reading your posts.

Choreaform movements are those where the arm or leg just start flopping around (for lack of a better term) on it's own terms. If the person holds their arms straight out, the fingers start moving like the person is playing the piano.
