lynn Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 DS is on day 6 of Augmentin and Day 4 of prednisone burst. I noticed more tics when we started Augmentin, more nuttiness (tecnical term) and volatility when we started Pred. Now, over the last day or so, I've noticed the intensification of the horrible OCD/ODD thing where he keeps trying to poke me, hit me, and say nasty things until he manages to start a fight, after which he is OK for a while. In the past, this was pretty much a yeast thing, and I'm guessing it still is. He's been eating yogurt all along. I started him on kefir yesterday, but I think he is going to need something stronger. I've checked the ingredients on Candida Clear and they don't seem to fight with abx. I'll also restart Candidase. Anyone recommend anything else? By the way, even with all of this going on and over the same time period, I've noticed that his executive function (the thing that makes him actually do his homework on time instead of just claiming that he will) has improved noticeably. Also, he just typed an entire essay for English, handed it to me to read, and every single word was spelled correctly, used correctly, and worked together to create a theme. "What a good essay." I said calmly while internally skipping around and throwing flowers in the air....
Stephanie2 Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 My son gets worsening of OCD when he has klebsiella, gut bacteria caused by overuse of antibiotics. this can be determined with a stool analysis or a certain urine test. you may need to get a special doc to order it, the regular docs don't believe in this stuff... Stephanie2 Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Forgot to mention, you should really do a very high dose of probiotics if your child is developing gut problems. A few of us on this forum use Custom Probiotics (make sure you get one without "strep" in it). Both of my children are now up to 400 bill cfu's per day (they are ages 2 and 5). Stephanie2 Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 We use vancomycin, but I believe our doc also prescribes augmentin for it. However, in our case augmentin did not seem to help, where vancomycin cured the problem within 3-4 days. A good stool analysis should include a sensitivity test to see what your particular yeast/bacteria will be sensitive to. I was also able to fight klebsiella with Oil of Oregano (Oreganol), which the stool analysis indicated would work. Lynn, The only other thing that I can think of (which you probably already know and are working on) is to cut down on sugar and make sure he drinks plenty of water. And go ahead and skip around throwing flowers in front of him... these kids have been through so much, they really need the encouragement!
AmberM Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 Just like Stephanie, we get some nasty gut bugs here too. Ours is always clostridia. We fight it with high doses of culturelle, sach. b (kefir/ kombucha), kyolic garlic, and if all else fails, flagyl or vanco. You have to use a gram negative antibiotic for this kind of bacteria or it won't die. With bad bacteria we get aggression, irritability, and really stinky poop. With yeast, we always get sillyness, night wakings with laughter, and drunken sailor attitude. When we have both going at the same time, things can get a little weird! -Amber
kimballot Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I always get a prescription for diflucan when I get an ABX prescription. Diflucan is a systemic antifungal. My son gets yeast not only in the gut but also fungal sinus infections. Diflucan really seems to help. ... and I agree with Mati's Mom that skipping around and throwing flowers in front of him is helpful too. (lol)
