1Purple_peep Posted May 5, 2010 Author Report Posted May 5, 2010 Thank you! I got the ok to call Dr. B from our ped. She will also do any bloodwork necessary for him. I called Dr. B's office and am in the process of setting up an apointment with him. His secretary is calling me back. Now I need to get on the horn with our insurance comapny to find out if they will cover out of our area with Dr. B.
matis_mom Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Anne, I've not had time to read through the other responses but I felt compelled to reply... your son sounds a lot like mine (he is 12, definite PANDAS) I would say your son has had strep for a while (why did they not swab the first time?) My son had the eye-blinking, and the tummy aches, bad throughts, OCD (handwashing mainly), and anxiety. I would recommend you take him back to the doctor and check for strep again, hopefully they will run titers too. Even if the tests come back negative, get him back on antibiotics and see how he does. See if they can prescribe something OTHER than amoxicillin, as it does not always clear strep. Also, it would be great if they could do a stool analysis to see if he has strep in his gut (that's where my son's was, it is not always in the throat --could be sinuses, ears, etc) I don't have much time right now but please ask any questions you may have and try to get to the bottom of this before you put him on any psychotropic meds, as often times these make things worse and/or mask the real problem. I am not saying your son has PANDAS, but it is a strong possibility and it's better to rule it out before you go the other route. Keep a journal of symptoms and meds, as it is often very useful in order to make connections. Also, test the whole family for strep, that has been a huge issue for us. Got to go, feel free to pm me with any questions! Isabel
bgbarnes Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Welcome-(I am pretty new here too and I have learned so much by this amazing group!!) I have not gone through the other posts but I am sure this has been said by others....You have found the right place. I am not an expert but it does sound like PANDAS to me. Find an expert or a PANDAS friendly Ped ASAP- we got lucky and it was my PED that diagnosed to start. My son's strep always gets diagnosed after a stomach ache never a sore throat! I hope you find a helpful doctor!! Welcome again! Brandy
1Purple_peep Posted May 5, 2010 Author Report Posted May 5, 2010 We have an apointment with Dr. B on June 3rd. I'm so happy it's not a huge wait. I'll keep you all posted on our progress. Thank you for being here and for your support:)
EAMom Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Don't forget to video tape any tics/movements so you can easily show them to docs later.
Megs_Mom Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 hope you find some good answers from Dr. B. I am personally a believer that any child with sudden onset OCD should be given antibiotics. It could save a LOT of pain for a lot of children. Good luck!
colleenrn Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 You have goten some great advice already on here, but I just wanted to reiterate the need to do another throat culture and treat with something other than Amoxicillin due to the high failure rate of Amox with strep. You would not want to sit it out until June. I love the picture of your son. He is beautiful! Hang in there. I am thinking of you! Colleen
