sf_mom Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Anti-inflammatory, Anti-Viral. I've seen a few people post about giving their kids fish oil. What is the benefit for PANDAS kids?
Chemar Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 (edited) the omega 3 essential fatty acids in fish oil are also known to be a beneficial supplement for those who have neurological problems. there is a very good overview and discussion of essential fatty acids here http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/showthread.php?t=6092 fish oil seems to be the best source for omega 3, which is most desired when inflammation is a problem as yes, as SF Mom pointed out, it is anti inflammatory as well as having anti viral properties just a word of caution again for those with TS some people (not all) who have Tourette seem to tic more when they get their omega 3 from fishoil (even tho they seem able to eat fish!) we have a number of anecdotal reports of this on the TS board, including that of my son I posted a link to a study that suggests this may be gene related? http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7098 for those people who tic more on fishoil, flaxseed oil is a good alternative source of omega 3 people with inflammatory conditions like PANDAS should avoid high omega6 as that promotes inflammation whereas the omega3 damps it Edited April 17, 2010 by Chemar adding link

sf_mom Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Much better said then my post!!!!!!! We use. http://www.omegabrite.com/products/liquid.html AND, got the recommendation from this forum.
justinekno Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 Thank you for this information about fish oil. I didn't realize it helped with inflammation. I had asked my son's dr about it a few months back and he said we would look to adding it later on as we had alot of gut issues to contend with. I'll have to bring it up again since the gut issues have been resolved.
Kayanne Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Much better said then my post!!!!!!! We use. http://www.omegabrite.com/products/liquid.html AND, got the recommendation from this forum. Wendy, What dose do you give your children? I've been giving double the recommended dose, but it is so expensive, that I was considering dropping back down to the recommended dose.... ~Karen

ShannonOtown Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Just a quick lesson learned... I was giving my son Omega Fish supplements... tics got worse. Found out after a food panel sentitivity test that he's sensitive to tuna, which is found in lot's of omega supplements. We take the Barleans Swirl Omega 3 Flax Oil supplement (Stawberry/Banana). 1 tablespoon a day... The entire family loves it. http://www.barleans.com/omega_swirl.asp
justinekno Posted April 19, 2010 Author Report Posted April 19, 2010 I'm curious if the consensus is that fish oil is a help to kids with non ts tics. Just a quick lesson learned... ShannonOtown Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 My son's tics came with all his other PANDAS symptoms. His symptoms are back down to baseline, but his eye tics are still lingering. I spend some time on the TS/Tics side of the forum and read that fish oil is used for inflammation, so I figured it can't hurt. I'll try anything at this point to help his tics.... I figure giving him a well -rounded variety of supplements will at the least keep him healthy and help booster his immune system.
justinekno Posted April 19, 2010 Author Report Posted April 19, 2010 (edited) Have you seen any improvement? or did you just start? Our first dr, a naturopathic dr, suggested cod liver oil for my son but it was soooo nasty tasting I couldn't make my son take it when he gagged on it the first time. I remember taking it as a child - ick. My husband has the flavored one but it still tastes horrible. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a liquid gel one? Everyone in our house takes some form of omega 3...including our PANDA (who presents with massive OCD with minimal tic behaviors). We all used to take the Carlson's lemon fish oil but even I had to stop that...just couldn't put the spoon into my mouth any more. We make all salad dressings with flax seed oil and olive oil. Those in our family who can swallow a large gel tab take Carlson's cod liver oil soft gels. Those who can swallow/chew a small gel tab take Carlson's chewable DHA-bursting orange flavor or Nordic Naturals. One dd who can't swallow a pill or manage the taste of the chewables takes Coromega 3 squeeze (it's like a little pudding in a squeeze tube). We've tried Barlean's Kid's Omega burst fruit chews (they are like a starburst) and we've tried GUmmy Omegaliscious sour raspberry-a gummy with a little sugar sprinkled on the outside. So there are plenty of alternatives to the actual oil....it's just matter of finding one that suits your family's taste.
justinekno Posted April 19, 2010 Author Report Posted April 19, 2010 Thank you for some options. I'll check them out. Anything is better than straight fish oil!!
