Johnsmom Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Hello- My 9 yr old nephew has come down with strep again. My sister in law tells me he had it back in February and he also had scarlet fever last spring. She told me the docs want to remove tonsils. He is non--Pandas, highly intelligent, good, very good boy. They have three children. His brother has defiant behavior. Hes kind of had it for a long time. They also have a dog. Should they really get the tonsils removed?? I think they should test the whole family, even the dog. What do you thinK? thanks johnsmom

(If they are really concerned about the dog, they should just put Rover on a course of abs...) It would be interesting if the "defiant" brother is a carrier with PANDAS! Do they think the strep is coming from school? So, the boy had strep last spring (2009), this feb (2010), and again this march (2010)...are they sure the feb/march episode isn't just 1 infection that didn't clear? Did they change toothbrushes etc? what antibiotic were they using? I seems a bit much to want to remove tonsils for what amounts to 1-2 strep infections per year. Tonsilectomy is a pretty major surgical procedure (a couple of weeks of recovery) and doesn't actually prevent kids from getting strep. Edited March 31, 2010 by EAMom
ajcire Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) I just got my non pandas dd tonsils out this past Friday. The ENT said she met the criteria in that since september she had strep 5 times. She had it the previous year a bunch as well. After the surgery he told us that her tonsils were a mess....looked like tonsils that had been through many infections I am hoping it helps her not get strep as often... my ped thinks it could help but even if she still gets strep, I'm glad I got them out being the ENT said they looked so terrible. I am surprised though that they would recommend it for your nephew's amount and timing of it.... maybe there is more to why they suggested it? Edited March 31, 2010 by ajcire

What do you thinK? thanks johnsmom I had my tonsils removed as a kid (5 yrs old, brother too at age 8) from too much strep and it did help me from getting it less. We didn't know about testing for carriers back then. My dad has been a carrier later in life so I wonder if he was back then too. I think testing the family is a good idea first but if the strep continues to come back many times a year, I"d have them removed. Susan
thereishope Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Do they suspect that he is a strep carrier? Some people do go on to be strep free after t and a, but we all know that is not always the case. You can get strep even after having tonsils removed. I think it is a personal decision. I had my son's removed, he even got strep a month afterwards, but I still don't regret surgery.
