My ds has been on penicillen vk since 1/28 (with 1 week off the first part of March which caused a big backslide.). We have seen improvement with mood, handwriting and frequency of tics but this weekend a red rash appeared on his cheeks. My husband first noticed it and honestly I thought it was due to the heat we had this past weekend (he played outside all weekend)but it's still there and the heat has gone so now I'm wondering if it something else. His mood has been very up and down all week. Any thoughts?

Since we've increased my daughter's zith (December) she's had a sunburn like rash across her cheeks as well. Her doctor says abx sometimes make you ultra sensitive to the sun. Sunblock does seem to be helping. Her eyes also seem more light sensitive. I'm still not sure its the abx though. Her very worst time with photophobia was when she was not on abx, after her tonsillectomy.

I thought about that but I thought it was odd that it's still there but looks more like bumps than sunburn. It's only his cheeks and not his nose. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it along with everything else :) My son has a zinc deficiency so he's always sensitive to the light despite the zinc supplements he now takes.

We have the same thing with my son.....not his nose, just his cheeks... little bumps... hard to notice at first glance, but definitely there. He almost always has it... whether on antibiotics or not now. Ped had no thoughts on this... and was not concerned.. I have been wondering if I should have taken him to a dermatologist...

Our's does not - just looks bumpy, if that makes sense.

Does it feel like sandpaper?

Is the rash red? We've had it in the past but I could usually attribute it to something he ate (he has a sensitivity to eggs) but not this time. This time it looks different. Hmmm.

Could it be a strep rash? I call it strep cheeks. When my kids get strep or are heavily exposed to it, they almost always get red cheeks with a fine tiny red bumpy rash. Given that his mood has been up and down this week, I would be highly suspicious that he could have strep. This is possible even though he is on penicillin, especially if he is on a lower maintainance dose. If this is a possibility, you could have him cultured, but be aware that you can get a false negative culture b/c he is on pen. Does he have any other skin changes on his body (esp. abdomen, neck, back)?

Would your physician switch you to Augmentin or Zithromax or a cephalosporin such as keflex or omniceph?

SFMom, my daughter's rash does feel a bit like sandpaper. It is really light though. You have to be looking for it although it was more pronounced this past week. What does that mean?

My son's is like that... mostly it blends in with the color of his face... so nobody would look at him and say look at that rash on his face except for me... cause I'm looking for it.
