My son is on his second trial of Azith 500mg for 5 days now. He was on 140mg 2 weeks ago with behavior improvements. His ASO numbers also went from 983 to 852 in 14 days!! I really thought we were onto something. Unfortunately this week his tics and body movements are much more pronounced, he's restless and school reports lots of inappropriate language while on abx.

I must add however that his younger brother's school had a strep incident and the younger brother is acting strange as well. He has lots of OCD symptoms and he's feeling ill. So both boys are "off" this week.

Shouldn't the abx be helping my older son if in fact he might have PANDAS? Or is it to soon to tell? Could he really be reacting to the strep that his younger brother may have brought home? Andrea

Hi,

I am no expert but why the lower dose? why didn't he stay on 500mg or even go to 250mg I don't understand the 140mg.

It might just be part of the saw-toothed healing pattern. Unfortunately, it also seems possible that he's experiencing a breakthrough reaction to strep exposure, even on the 500 mg. of Azith; there've been previous posts about that happening.

I would watch him closely for the next few days and see if the pendulum swings back toward the positive. If it doesn't, you might want to see your doctor.

Our son has been on antibiotics since August, he has had three high dose IVIG treatments and has been exposed to pink eye or strep throat at school every week since the beginning of Feb. When he is exposed to strep throat we see a rise in symptoms a day or two prior to the other children in his class being diagnosed. Same with pink eye, symptom increase a day or two prior to children being diagnosed but a little less of a response than strep throat. As he gets further out from his last treatment we see less of a response overall. We also see a response in our younger son a day or two after our older son. Its like they both have an allergy to just being close to someone with strep.

PANDAS treatment/recovery is a slow and painful process..... BUT we are seeing improvements in areas we didn't know were PANDAS. Give it time. Unfortunately, probably much longer than a month.
