Hi,

I have a question. My son has been diagnosed with Lyme, and PANDAS. He is currently on Zithromax, Rifampin, Tindamax ,Tenex, and Abilify. He was showing improvement until yesterday. He was moody, bad thoughts, whiny, etc, etc. Strep is going around his school. Even if I took him to the doctor for a strep test at this point, what would they do? Is it necessary?

thank you

Judy

Hi Judith, you may want to post this on the PANDAs section of our board. I don't know much about it so I can't advise. The parents over there will have a ton of insight for you! Maybe Chemar can move this post???

Cheri, if you see this you may want to relocate this thread! thx!

Chances are very good that with the rifampin and the zithromax your child would have a neg. strep test anyway. How long has your son been on these medications? What I wonder is if the abx's are resolving the symptoms that the other meds were prescribed for, might you be seeing SEs from those meds?

Judith- My daughter always shows an uptick in symptoms (usually mood issues) when exposed to strep at school. Once she is away from the exposure (either the child is treated or dd is pulled out of school) the increase in symtoms typically resolve in a couple of days.

This may be what you are seeing.....

I would agree with the above posts - often even exposure to strep will trigger a reaction in our daughter. When currently treated on abx, so far, this seems to be short lived. However, we run with a 3 day rule - if things are bad for 3 days, then we assume something is happening & reach out to our doctors for help. I hate those 3 days! Also, from what I understand about Lyme, sometimes an abx stops being as effective for a short period of time & another abx may be helpful instead. Then you can often go back to the original mix.

It must be incredibly difficult to deal with both PANDAS and Lyme. There are a couple of great parents here with a lot of experience in both - you may want to click on the search button above and search on "lyme". Or click on LymeMom's screen name & you'll see all her prior posts - click on those & you'll see some great information. I think the other mom's screen name is PacificMama, but I am bad with names, so forgive me if I am wrong!!!

And welcome to this support group!

My S was on Abilify for almost 1 year at 12 years old. It may have worked for a few months but made him REALLY irritable, moody and rude after a few months of use. That wasn't my son. They were definitely side affects of Abilify.
