pixiesmommy Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Wow...I hope there is no reaction...this is what I have been waiting to see....a child post IVIG get strep and no PANDAS symptoms....keeping you in my prayers!! (not that I am happy Pixie got strep....but, that she has not had symptoms.....you know what I mean, right?) Were you rapid positive or only culture positive??? Rapid positive- Pixie's was barel visible, yr old's barely visible, and mine was so light I could not even see it, but the dr tilted it a certain way and I could BARELY make it out in that angle.
EAMom Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 We were told to give her the 500mg in the morning to best protect her during the day. which doesn't protect against strep from family members (which has always been our worst source of exposure...several times strep carrier sister and once myself).
EAMom Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 He was iffy if the z-pack would get rid of mine, but wants us all back in 4 weeks to re-test anyway. Are you getting 500mg/day? Would your doc be willing to increase that to a 10 day course, since he is iffy about a reg. 5 day course getting rid of the strep? a 5 day course always cleared our carrier dd (several times, even when augmentin didn't)...however her infection wasn't in her sinuses (that I am aware of). Are you allergic to clindamycin? That would be another ab to try if the Azith. fails.
pixiesmommy Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Not sure about allergy to clindamycin. He would probably extend my z-pack, but I am conflicted about that because of other reasons too. I think we will probably try to wait it out unless there is a blip on the radar, and do the one course then re-test in a month.
sf_mom Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 I want you to know...... about 1 1/2 years ago I started having the following symptoms: dual knee pain, dual hip pain, unexplained fatigue, urinary frequency/urgency, lower back pain, night waking, hair loss, general aches and pains. I attributed this all to having had a twin pregnancy, hormonal recovery. Last fall I got a cold and those symptoms went off the charts..... it was so bad I could not sleep for several days. At that point, I treated myself with Azithromycin 500 m.g. daily for a month and all the symptoms have completely disappeared and I have not suffered since. You should consider checking titers on yourself to see if they are abnormally high. I have spoken to Dr. K at length about our family issues: My husband's high titers, my symptoms, 3 kids potential PANDAS (not all genetically related), etc. I honestly think its all related. We recently tested my niece's titers who were visiting from MN in between my two son's getting sick in 2007 from exposure to RF and both have extremely high titers with no reported cases of strep in the last two years. One niece who is 13 would be considered to have low level PANDAs symptoms: urinary issues, AD/HD. They are on a month long antibiotic trail to see if low level symptoms resolve. I will keep you posted. Not sure about allergy to clindamycin. He would probably extend my z-pack, but I am conflicted about that because of other reasons too. I think we will probably try to wait it out unless there is a blip on the radar, and do the one course then re-test in a month.
pixiesmommy Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Thanks SF Mom. I was actually just thinking I wonder if my "fibro" issues are actually me reacting to strep. In fact DH and I were talking about how the kids always start acting up when I am feeling my lowest. I think this may be the answer. I'm not sure how to convince a dr I need a month of azith. Did Dr K treat you as well? We have asked him to treat us as a precaution in the past and he would not. Unfortunately we can't afford to run titers on anyone right now, even a follow-up on Pixie, since the Cunningham study has lost funding.
bmom Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 My son had IVIG over a year ago. 4 months post IVIG, he started getting a return of PANDA symptoms. He was not sick that I could tell. I had him tested on the rapid for strep just to rule it out. He was postitive. I had the whole family checked and we were all positive with no symptoms. He did zithromax for 5 days and his Augmentin. Symptoms subsided. We upped his preventative dose and things were fine. Reinforced that strep is my enemy that can strike with no symptoms. Hope that helps.
KeithandElizabeth Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 bmom: How is your son now, in terms of reacting to strep? Or has he not had a strep infection since the one 4 months post IVIG? Did you decide to keep your son on antibiotics? Elizabeth
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Has Pixie had a T&A? I hope you are back on track soon. From what I understand, the 300 mg is a treatment dose. I didn't ask that question specifically, but it was prescribed by the pediatrician, and his words were something to the effect of - give her the Cefdinir on a 10 day dose to clear the strep out and then return to the prophylactic dose. That sounds like it's a treatment dose? Hearing her cough as she sleeps tonight - waiting with baited breath to see what kind of kid we have tomorrow...
