colleenrn Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 I took my 3 yo for a throat culture today b/c he had the rash he usually gets on his abdomen (red little bumps), started wetting the bed again, acting wild, and has swollen lymph nodes in neck. My oldre 3 kids also had a ramp up of symptoms over the weekend even though they are on daily Zith. His rapid test came back positive. My NP and I hugged each other b/c we were so glad to get a "confirmed" strep test as his cultures come back negative a lot and his rapid has never been positive. He is on another 10 days of Omnicef. He had just been on 10 days of it 3 weeks ago. We are thinking of pursuing whether to do a T&A and was wondering if anyone has had it done with a 3 year old. My 7 yo is having his ENT consult next week for the same. I want to scream. I HATE strep. Thanks for listening, or reading. Colleen
thereishope Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 I'm sorry about the strep, but if you have to look at anything positive...like you said the rapid came back +. It's horrible to wait for cultures when the rapid is neg and worse when the culture is neg and you are left wondering what the heck is going on. When my son was 5 he had t and a. It went smooth and recovered from surgery quickly. sadly, he did get strep again a month later. Luckily, so far he has not had strep since the last infection after surgery. I worry about age and I don't know enough about anesthesia and 3 year olds to comment. All I would suggest is waiting until PANDAS symptoms are gone. This will help with the surgery itself (anxiety) and will be safer in the event PANDAs symptoms resurface after surgery. Just follow from others' experiences and get good abx during surgery and post surgery. One even had a steroid burst readily available in the event PANDAS came flooding back.
colleenrn Posted February 22, 2010 Author Report Posted February 22, 2010 Thanks for your response Vickie. I am going to pursue the T&A first with my 7 year old b/c it helped his big brother and sister a lot and even on the daily Zithromax he reacts very strongly whenever he is exposed to strep- much more than my 2 kids without tonsils/adenoids. It is scary doing the T&A in any child, but it especially worries me in a child so young. The very seasoned ENT who did our first two children has moved away, so thin would be a different surgeon, which adds to my worry. Maybe the ENT will give me a "buy one, get one free" surgery for the two boys. Colleen

Do all your kids have pandas? We went for the follow up T & A appt. today & shared Dr. T recommendation of good abx pre + post surgery. He agreed the next pandas pt. he sees he will do that. I guess this process is all about small steps. So even on daily zith your other kids still react to someone else active infection? What happens when they are at school with kids that have active infections? This disorder sounds like a nightmare. Can we please wake up! I hate strep too! There is a genetic factor right? We think my niece has had this for about 2 and a half years, but my sister never knew what it was, nor did I, until my son's 1st episode this past month. She had Strep the summer of 07 it came on all of a sudden. Her symptoms are not as classic as my son but are definitely there. She is going for T &A in April and is having a full immunological work up. As far as a 3 year olds. When I told my sons teacher he was going to have T& A another mom in his class said her little girl had them out at 3 and it was easy, but she is not pandas. Seems a little bit harder on these pandas kiddos. Hang in there. You have been so helpful to me Lisa
colleenrn Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 Yes, even on daily abx they react when exposed to strep, especially if it is someone they are exposed to a lot. My 3 oldest do have PANDAS and I was still hoping my youngest would not, but this clinching it for me. I believe there is definitley a genetic component b/c I was a PANDAS child, my kids are, and two of my sister's kids are. Colleen

It still amazes me that one day you can have a sweet, kind, lovable, cnnected child and the next day you have a angry, sad, disconnected child. I am with you I hate strep. Thought I would share with you our experience with T & A. My son is also 3, and we had his removed in December. This was due to so many strep infections, we felt this was our last resort. The procedure was much easier then we thought it would be on him, however about a week later he started his crazy behavior and we took him into his doctor. The doctor spent awhile observing him, and agreed he wasn't himself. Thought his anaolgy was pretty good " It is like there is a Rat in the room" (When he get's strep he can't sit still and is very disconnected) The rapid test came back negative, so the doctor decided to take some blood and run more tests. He called a couple days later and stated that he did find traces of Strep, but thinks we are getting a handle on it?? Put him on more antibiotics and low and behold I had my sweet boy back. Fast forward to last week. Horrible melt downs, angry, crying all the time, hitting, bed wetting, disconnected, counting everything. Took him in and rapid came back positve. We have been on Augmentin since last Thursday and I am getting my sweet boy back again, I would have to say it has been slower recovery this time....Not sure why?? I guess what I am saying is the T & A has not helped us yet, but I have read many success stories. Ginger
