mom23boyz Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Just wondering what any of you have heard about this. My son had the nasal H1N1 vaccine this past Oct. 09. He had been sick with strep throat only once in his life that I am aware of last Feb 2009. NEVER HAD ANY PANDAS SYMPTOMS WITH THAT STREP ILLNESS. Now in Jan. 2010 has PANDAS symptoms not sure if strep is the trigger, as he did not have a + throat culture.( but it was a few week after the pandas symptoms started that we took him to the Dr. for that culture). Wondering if the vaccine could have triggered Pandas??? P.S. Thank you to all you wonderful people out there who are helping me with this new adventure I could not make it through the day without your support and stories. Lisa K.

My son had a horrible exacerbation after the nasal regular (not H1N1) flu vaccine. This was how we finally reached a PANDAS diagnosis. The immune specialist that we see now said that putting a live virus into his body was one of the worst things we could have done to him. Symptoms were almost immediate. My son had PANDAS before the vaccine, so it triggered an exacerbation, not sure if it can trigger PANDAS. My guess would be your son had it before the vaccine, but if we have learned anything in the last five years of fighting this disorder is that anything is possible!
dcmom Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 There are many possibilities: your son may have had strep with no symptoms, that either resolved or did not show up on culture. your son's pandas may have been triggered by this asymptomatic strep or the previous strep but have been EXTREMELY mild- then a more serious episode triggered by the vaccine. Possibly the vaccine triggered a PAND or PITAND. Sorry you are going through this. I wish healing for your family.

My son who was diagnosed almost 6 years ago had H1N1 and it did a number on him. it was recommened we still get him the shot which we did in early december right when he was finally geting back on track and he had a bad reaction to it. the morning after the shot he woke up dizzy (had never had this before) he then spike a fver and missed another whole week of school. However once he recovered there was some PANDAS symptoms, but mild compared to the virus itself. He si doing well right now. Good luck Kathy
colleenrn Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 The nasal H1N1 vaccine is a live vaccine, as opposed to the injection which is a killed vaccine. A lot of children with PANDAS do have major flareups with any live vaccine (MMR, Chickenpox). It could be that. In addition, it is possible to get a negative culture and still have strep b/c strep can hide in places other than the throat (sinuses, gut, perianal area, skin). Colleen
jewels Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 I fully agree with the live vaccine being a trigger too. Would also like to mention that last year dd had an overnight onset of tics on the fourth day of a high fever. The hospital did the usual pandas swabs and couldn't find anything. By chance the dr did a urine culture even though she was not complaining of pain, or smelly urine etc. She was however having sensitive bladder issues and went to the toilet every 10 mins., which we have seen in the past with no urine infection. The culture came back with a nasty infection in her bladder and kidney. I never thought to check her urine. What we need is a form with a full checklist of tests that can find those bugs that hide very well! It seems that after the first attack, many childrens bodies see every germ and virus as a trigger to go into an autoimmune mode.

Wonder if it is in his GI tract. Do they do stool cultures to test for it there? Thanks Colleen for any input you may have. Lisa
thereishope Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Welcome. If you click on this thread it will bring you to Amelia'a post. Her son's first PANDAS exacerbation was also triggered shortly after H1N1 vaccination. There was another factor such as a sinus infection. I cannot remember if the infection was detected prior or after vaccination. Perhaps the two of you can "share notes". http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7059 Please make sure to notify the makers of the vaccine, VAERS and NVIC. If your son received the nasal spray, did he get checked out for a sinus infection yet. I believe congestion and sinus infection did follow people (not PANDAS) weeks after the vaccine was administered. Sometimes sinus infections can be so deep and hidden, only a MRI will detect it. Sinus infections are notorious for PANDAS exacerbations.

Our son has had a sinus infection since he had the flu mist that will not budge. We've done two steroid bursts with Aug & now Azith. We just had a CT scan and are waiting for results. I never made the connection of the sinus infection and the vaccine but that is when the exacerbation started (mid Nov.) and we are still in it!

Thanks for giving me a path to head down next. Lisa

He at the moment is also fighting an upper respiratory infection on top of recovering from tonsillectomy. His pandas symptoms are at about 60%. His throat cultures are neg. Maybe he has other triggers besides strep or the strep is hiding somewhere?? Pandas symptoms came on with the fever and URI. I guess it's a guessing game?
thereishope Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 upper respiratory infection? It wouldn't be Mycroplasma Pneumonia, would it?
mom23boyz Posted February 22, 2010 Author Report Posted February 22, 2010 upper respiratory infection? It wouldn't be Mycroplasma Pneumonia, would it? possible, what do you do for a test. Which abx treat it? He has green phlegm. I know tmi
thereishope Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Mycroplasma Pneumonia has gotten A LOT of attention on here. It has been a PANDAS trigger for some kids and even the original trigger instead of strep. Antibiotics like Augmentin will not erradicate Mycro P. You need Zithromax, or some people are taking a "bigger gun" like Biaxin. Some docs will listen to the child's chest and give a clincial dx w/o any tests. If they are unsure due to no symptoms or they want proof of Mycro P, they do a blood test to check antibody levels. You should seriously look into this.
