We increased my son's Azithromycin to 500mg per day 5 weeks ago. Since then he's had diarrhea 5 times (never really had it before except once or twice when sick). I'm wondering if anyone else who gives their child high dose of Azith has seen this. Is this yeast, or possibly some other side effect of the medicine. He's 63lbs, 9yo, taking Nystatin, caprylic acid, 2 Florastor (probiotic) at night and 2 Lacto-Tri Blend (probiotic) in the a.m. Would love to know if anyone else has experienced this after upping antibiotics and how they dealt with it!

My daughter has loose stools some of the time from the antibiotics she is on. I mentioned it to Dr. T along with the fact that it doesn't seem to bother her and her stomach doesn't hurt and he didn't seem concerned. I would think a diet rich in rice, bananas, and other foods that tend to bind would help. Lots of fluids is also good to replace lost fluids. Maybe Gatoraide? (not sure)

Thanks for your reply Momaine. He does get a bad stomach ache right before it happens and it's all out diarrhea, not just slightly loose stools, which is why I'm concerned. He feels pretty bad afterwards, then refuses to go to school the next day. But the rice and bananas are a good idea.

Yes, our son responded that way, especially on regular Augmentin at high doses as compared to the XR version.

We answered back with increased probiotics (at least three times each day), and a cup of yogurt and a half-banana every morning;he also eats applesauce and yogurt with his lunch. The banana and applesauce are in keeping with the "BRAT diet," bananas-rice-applesauce-toast that is helpful with gastro-intestinal upset, include diarrhea.

Since then, all's well!

Hi

My dd gets tummy upsets with abx high dose. The dr said it can be a normal side effect. I use saccharomyces boulardii and she is better in a few days. However, if there is a nasty smell to the diarrhea then I would advise you to tell your dr.

Our non PANDAS child has this problem with antibiotics and we find that Yakult (in the yogurt section) really helps a ton.
