Joan Pandas Mom Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Hi all. Does anyone have a list of recent publications or articles on the use and justification of long-term abx? My pedi is wondering why we should continue with abx if my son is doing much better post T&A. Does anyone know where to buy or view Scientific American Mind?

As for articles on long-term abx efficacy, I'd love to see those, also. Hopefully seomone here will be able to chime in. Scientific American Mind can be purchased at most of the larger, national bookstores; we got our last copy at Barnes & Noble. You can also purchase issues on-line; I think the cost is $7.95/per, or something like that.
Buster Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Are you asking about the effect of long-term antibiotics? or the justification of using antibiotics for minimizing the severity of GABHS triggered auto-immune responses? The efficacy in PANDAS diagnosed children? or a "how does it work" question? I have papers on all of these items. Buster Hi all. For myself, I would like to have articles on long-term abx use for any issues relating to PANDAS, so I suppose that would be both "the efficacy in PANDAS diagnosed children" and "minimizing the severity of GABHS triggered auto-immune responses." Though if the latter talks primarily about rheumatic fever, I'm not sure how much sway it will have with some physicians. My pediatrician is new to PANDAS and has thus far been willing to write us prescriptions and renewals for the abx, but as she's only made them available one month or two at a time, she's clearly not currently thinking that we're on a track for applying this treatment for a year or more. THAT's the information I'd like to get her. Thanks!

Hi Buster, I am looking for info on the justification of using long term abx on GABH triggered auto-immune response and the efficiency in PANDAS diag. I will take all three if it isn't too much trouble. My Pedi only has Dr. Swedo's research and would like more. The Neuro we saw felt the same. We are seeing Dr. L soon.
EAMom Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 If it helps anybody's case, the Stanford pediatric rheumatologist we saw described PANDAS as "rheumatic fever of the brain" and agreed that long term abs was justified for PANDAS, just as it is for rheumatic fever.

Hi EAMom! Would you be willing to share that Stanford doctor's name? That way, if my ped has any further questions, maybe she could contact him, "colleague to colleage." Many thanks!

When my pediatrician called Dr. Cunningham she told him that very same thing.
