Doug Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 Hello everyone, sorry I haven't posted in a few. ( Santa brought us a new computer.) First. Lauren is doing 99% better, the tics are gone and the seperation anxiety has diminished. We had a phone consultaion with Dr. T a few weeks ago, we are running all the tests he recomends. " We have allready ran many, so far all her blood work has come back normal" We are still waiting the results from a few tests.. " Epstein Bar, & Lmyes " He is having us start a propholactic dose of Azithromycin we are giving her 1tsb two times a week. ( She is 37lbs) We are also giving her probiotics. My question is should we be doing anything else? My biggest worry is that this is not Strep drivin and a unknown virus might bring this on. Anyway I look forward to hearing from you all. Happy New Year and God Bless. -Doug Patrick
faith Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 Doug, did you mean your daughter was doing well (99% better) before the azith or due to the azith? I get the impression she had an exacerbation after a flu shot or you don't think that was an issue? did you ever get the second one? Just curious why you started azith if she was doing well? did she have issues for a while before this? I understand what you mean about not being sure it is strep driven, I wonder of that too. I don't recall your daughters whole history, was there ever strep that you know of that started up tics or symptoms? are you doing the azith as a preventative? thanks Faith
thereishope Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 I'm glad she is doing well! I continue to give my son Omega 3's and a vitamin that includes DHA. My theory is to keep the brain as healthy as I can so if he should get sick again, it will already be healthier. My son also has some PANDAS resurface with viruses and it seems like the further we get away from that last strep triggered exacerbation, the viral setbacks aren't as bad. God, I hope I don't regret saying that. I also continue to respect my kids' overall health and body more and continue to choose organic if it is reasonable enough and I can and dramatically cut down on what chemicals they ingest. I also keep hand sanitizer ready for whenever they come home from school. Also, keep Ibuprofen on hand and don't hesitate to give it if you think she is getting sick. I would think it's easier to keep inflammation down before it begins rather than backtracking. Remember that some kids have more triggers in addition to strep and viruses. Some will have an excaerbation due to exposure to strep and illness and when they have allergies. So, if you see some problems resurfacing, don't rule out those possibities.
faith Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Vickie, does your omega 3 have more DHA or more EPA in it? just curious. also, does your son have or had tics as one of his symptoms? So you feel this omega 3 (is it fish oil specifically?) helps with attention, or just in general? thanks. fish oil seems to increase my son's tics, but I always want to try again, because I think it is a very good supplement and may help with attention/focus, but sometimes it looks like things that help with attention are not good for the tics..... I think some discussion I had a while back suggests that tics/tourettes kids do better on fish oils that have the higher EPA in relation to the DHA, but still skiddish on trying. ( don't know how this plays into PANDAS tho.) -Faith
momto2pandas Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 The right fish oil supplement has been the single most helpful thing I have used in my decades of dealing with "PANDAS" in myself...but it has to be the right one, with the right ratios. An old psychiatrist of mine from Harvard turned me on to Omegabrite, which is the brand on which the clinical research out of Harvard was done showing positive effects on neuropsych symptoms. They make a big deal out of the exact ratios of EPA/DHA, and my psych felt that this was essential as well. We order it on-line (they have a pediatric formulation as well as an adult one) and it seems to work better than any of the many brands we've tried from drug stores. I also have a number of friends who have reported positive results with these. I think there is a bunch of research cited on their website if you want to look into it. thereishope Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Let me see how to answer this. He gets a multivitamin in the morning that has DHA from fish oil in it. Then before bed he gets Omega 3 w/ DHA and EPA. On his night time vitamin, as I call it, there is more DHA in it than EPA. So, in the scheme of the entire day, he definitely gets more DHA than EPA. I give him it at night because I figured that's when the brain prcoesses what it has learned form the day, so that's when I want the most amount of Omega 3's in his system. What is about the Omega 3's that make the tics worse? They sell vegetarian Omega 3's that do not derive from fish oil. I wonder if that would help. My son never had tics.
