You're deduction makes total sense to me. I just tend to look at all the reasons that might be thrown at you by someone. I could see someone asking, well, something must be in the water making it happen. But, since they live a far enough distance from each other, one cannot argue anything like that.

I wonder how many of us can pin point where their child came into conatct with this strain. I assumed it was at my son's new school. He had started preschool and w/in a week he had PANDAS. But, then, when read about your experience and it was a delayed reaction w/ PANDAS symptoms surfacing, it makes me think if there could be a differnet source for my son. But my memory of what we did months prior to Sept 2008 is such a blur.

I don't know Vickie, it could have been a series of events that eventually caused PANDAS in your child.

With our younger son, it was immediate, with our old son, it was a series of events that got passed off as 'its nothing' by the Dr.s. You know I was told a child under two doesn't get strep by their Pediatrician....... GEEZ!!!!!!

BUT, if your child was constantly sick I can understand why the immune system finally gave up. We may never know the answer, I'm just so grateful to the Dr.'s that are willing to get both my son's well.

Wow, Wendi.

I do wonder if your kids had the same bay area strain my dd had. Her FEVER/probable strep onset was Jan. 08 (that's when PANDAS symptoms started...both kids were culture positive in March 08).

I agree that whether a child develops PANDAS is often a matter of bad luck. IMO sometimes it involves repeated (often untreated) infections perhaps b/c the child doesn't show "typical strep symptoms or for whatever reason is prone to strep. Perhaps if these kids were treated promptly/aggressively/consistently with antibiotics PANDAS would never develop in the first place. Other times I agree that it involves a particularly nasty strain of strep (just like there are RF strains of strep) that hits a vunerable child (genetically, immunologicially, and the "right age" window).

EAMom,

WELL SAID and I concur!!!!! AND, I think its entirely possible our kids got the same strain because of timeframe and location to each other.

AND, I want to add that I believe in my 'heart of hearts' that this is a completely recoverable illness. BUT, some parents will need to be much more aggressive and diligent than others..... and why I keep posting about the potential resiliency of some of the strep bacteria.

In my dreams, I want to have a party where are kids are well, the suffering was a distant memory and millions of others are being treated easily.

P.S. Diana son played with a child several time that was diagnosed with ARF (December)...... for 4 months after (December through April) Diana's son had numerous ear infections and 'I think' sinus infections with sudden on-set in April.

A party celebrating health and recovery would be something wonderful to strive for. But I'm so darn paranoid now, I'd be scared to have him in a room with kids that are known for being asymptomatic with strep.

I wonder if the paranoia and fear will ever go away. I don't keep in a bubble, but a do worry.

I think in my son, my gut tells me he is genetically susceptible to it, then he must have come into contact with the right strain. There may be other things that weakened his body as well to set him up for it, but I don't know that either. He was never a sick child. Maybe 2 ear infections and croup once by the age of 5. He did have a reaction to the chicken pox vaccine. That's the only red flag I can think of. I know I will never really know how this all came about. It's just sad to sometimes think...if I just picked a diffrenet school, none of this may have happened.....

I agree but when PANDAs is a distant memory....... we'll have to force ourselves to celebrate.
