courtneyjolie Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Okay, so I brought my son to his pediatrician just now. I brought with me a binder full of information on PANDAS. I told him I wanted a throat culture and an ASO titer. He told me he was unfamiliar with PANDAS and it sounded to him like something people have come up with to give them an answer to these issues. He said that if you brought in 100 kids off the street and tested them for strep, 50% could test positive and that wouldn't mean much. I explained to him that lately my son wouldn't answer any question, he will just stand there and look at me. The dr. then told me he'd like an EEG done to make sure he's not having seizures. How could this be seizures when it is ONLY when I ask him a question?????? The dr. agreed only to do a throat culture, so I should have the results by Friday. Other than that I am pretty much frustrated.
thereishope Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Take a deep breath and see what the culture is and take it from there. If they don't call you, call them to verify the result. Did the rapid come back negative? How did these people get their medical degrees?
peglem Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 LOTS of doctors and specialists do not think strep is a problem unless you are showing signs of infection...
courtneyjolie Posted December 9, 2009 Author Report Posted December 9, 2009 they didn't do a rapid. he just said he would know by friday. I don't know how they get their degrees, but I'm sure if it were their children it would be a different story!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, just venting a lil!
peglem Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 No need to apologize! It is so frustrating when we know our kids are struggling and suffering and we NEED the help of a physician, but they won't help, or don't even recognize the problem. What's the big deal @ doing a rapid strep test? Now if he does have strep it'll have to wait before you start abx...I get why you're upset. I've been there many times!
thereishope Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Unfortunately, I think sometimes it really ends up being a power kick for some doctors.

Courtney--maybe you can ask your doctor next time what he would think if those "50% that had strep" also started having OCD issues (which your son may be having if he feels a compulsion to not answer any questions!)...and along with the OCD some had tics...and all of this stuff left with antibiotics in many of the kids...What would he think then?! I would agree to the EEG and any other tests he suggests, just to be sure, and then document as much as possible the frequency of symptoms to take back in to him--(or find another doctor.)
EAMom Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Hi CourtneyJolie... ughhh. Where do you live?
courtneyjolie Posted December 10, 2009 Author Report Posted December 10, 2009 We live in Jennings, Louisiana
colleenrn Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 It is a shame that when a physician does have enough knowledge of a certain disorder that he/she can't have the courage to admit it INSTEAD of claiming the disorder to be "made up". Post the results of the culture when you hear from your doctor's office and we can help you go from there. It would not hurt to do an EEG to rule out seizure activity. There is a type of seizure called absence seizure (also called petit mal seizure) that causes the person to look like they are just blank staring. It most likely is not the case with your son, but being able to rule it out will confirm for your doctor that there is no seizure activity. Good luck. Colleen
