Hi all...just wondering how much Advil to give a 70 lb. and 100 lb. PANDAS child that would be effective....and, how often? Should the results be immediate (if there will be any), or, does it take some time?

Hi P.mom...we've noticed a difference within 1 hour.

 

We'll give our 54 pounder 200mg. So, a 100lb child could take 400mg (which is the reg. adult dose, although the dose on the bottle is a bit conservative...I'm about 120 pounds and have been told I can take up to 800mg short term). I would say a 70 pounder could take 300mg.

 

We give our dd 200mg daily (long term dose). Short term we could do this 3-4x daily. Give with food.

I think I will try it at dinner every day since lately almost every single night it takes him forever to go through his bathroom/bedtime routine. He keeps coming back with reasurrance questions, I'm kind of used to it by now, but sometimes it can be past 10pm before he finally settles down.

Have you considered 5HTP at bedtime? I used to give it to my son before bed for sleep anxiety. It didn't work instantly, but within a few days I believe it helped.

For my son, it takes 1/2 hour to get in his system and it starts to wear off at the 5 hour mark. When he is on the verge of getting bad, I give it every 6 hours.

 

When his symptoms are managaeble and minor (but there), I seem to be able to get away with giving him it once in the morning and maybe I'll give it once in the evening.

 

Currently, he is not taking any and he is fine.

 

If anyone else is intersted in dosing, I give my 43 pound son 200 mg (per doctor).

My dd is 92 lbs and she takes 2 200 mg Advil per day. (one in the am and one in the pm) It helps a LOT. I talked with my doctor about what is too much and she said at her weight she could have 3 of those pills 4 times per day! That sounds like an aweful lot.

 

The 200mg begins to work in about 30 minutes for her. And the effects last almost 24 hours if I wait it out. I upped it to 2 so I wouldn't have to see her begin to fail after it began to wear off. It's heart breaking to see her struggle when I know an Advil can bring her such relief.

Has anyone else had success with this? We all have colds and our son is much worse in terms of PANDAS symptoms (he only has a sniffle and slight cough, although I am pretty sick). He's pretty scared, especially at bedtime, and waking up having us check the house 2 or 3 times a night, so we're all exhausted.

 

I am going to start with 200mg twice a day - he is 63 lbs. Does that dose sound ok?

 

He is scheduled for IVIG in 2 1/2 weeks - just trying to make it though until we (HOPEFULLY) get some long-term relief.
