My Sydenham's Chorea (so they say), is doing pretty well. We are 5 months in to the saw-tooth healing process. She is @ 85% back to us. ( we lost her there for awhile). She has lingering problems with tingling/itichih in her toe and finger joints. She still can not wear underwear, socks, shoes (other than Crocs), shirts /pants with seams and that our fitted She is 4yrs old and continue to say "her body fails her".

I am trying to decipher if it is

1. Sensory Perception

2. OCD

3. Joint pain from possible rheumatic fever

I was also wondering does anyone have any experience on how long these symptoms stay.thanks--J

OTSmith,

tingling/itichih in her toe and finger joints

Do you think she could be reacting to elastic? It can cause an allergic type reaction with these autoimmune illnesses.

Do you see any redness or irritation in areas where elastic would be tight on her skin? Underware line might be most obvious

Others on here have said their child had/have joint pain. One said that their child said they felt hot inside. So that is not out of the ordinary. To me the clothing issue sounds sensory. The clothes that she does wear....does she need to wear the same ones over and over? do you notice she will only wear one color? how does she react when you mention she should try wearing socks today?

Was that one of her first symptoms to surface? If so, that may be one of the last ones to go. How much of the clothing issue is part of the remaining 15% (you said she 85% back to herself).

My son has SC too and CANNOT wear socks, shoes (other than Crocs), underwear (to my horror), and anything seamed. He will also not wear long pants or long sleeved shirts right now. My son is 8 and it is harder to get away with it. But, I have decided that this is his normal for now. I had never thought it may be SC, which he has a lot of. I had chalked it up to sensory stuff! Thank you for the insight! It makes a lot of sense that it would be SC!

The symptoms you describe sound similar to peripheral neuropathy -- the tingling/itching in toes and fingers. There are a lot of things that can cause that. Did she have full-on chorea? Did she have ventricular issues from the ARF? Was she on metronidazole by any chance?

There are also a number of sensory processing disorders (sensory integration, sensory defensiveness) which can manifest in the "not feeling right" items you are mentioning. We had to cut labels out of a lot of clothes in the past. That issue did seem to go away for us over time.

My reason for raising the peripheral neuropathy is that it seems to only affect the very long nerves and then only the small fiber nerves. The tingling should be checked. Feeling uncomfortable is one thing, having tingling, numbness or feelings of heat is another.

Regards,

Buster
