momtocole1 Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 I'm asking this a differenty way now, because I can't sleep I am so worried. Has anyone's child had an adverse reaction to the steriod and they went on to do IVIG with a successful outcome? Dr. K. wrote me back and was not overly concerned at all about my son's reaction. He said it happens and it usually settles down in a day or two spontaneously. He told me to just stop the burst since we are doing IVIG asap... Thanks, Judy...
EAMom Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 I believe Bronxmom2's son didn't react well to steroids, but was still helped by pex. Our immunologist (Stanford--although not a PANDAS expert) didn't feel that pred burst success would necessarily be predictive of how effective IVIG would be.
brooke Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 Our son reacted well behaviorally to prednisone, but he could not handle the 'heart racing". However, he reacted quite well to IVIG!

Also in our dd9's case, it took 14 days from start of pred burst until we saw a noticable effect. We did 6 days of a burst, on day 14 we had improvement until day 18, then back to where we started. mama2alex Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 In our case we had some degree of adverse reaction, but a few days after stopping (we only did 3 days instead of 5) we saw a vast improvement. Not sure how all this might correlate with IVIG success in our case though, as we haven't had IVIG yet. I'm not sure where this idea that a good experience with prednisone = IVIG success came from. Prednisone is a powerful drug and I believe side effects are common with it. I wouldn't worry too much.
