LovingMJ Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 I have seen on here a couple of times that some find ibuprofen for relief. How often do you give it? How many times per day and do you give it every day until the episode passes? Is this harmful at all to our DCs bodies? I gave him some this morning prior to daycare.
thereishope Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 Ibruprofen can be given every 6-8 hours. I would give it every 6 hours. I gave it, on a "as needed" basis when I saw behaviors come back. I only realized it may help after my son recovered from strep triggered PANDAS. I used it for when behvaiors resurfaced with allergies and viruses. It worked like clockwork. Every time at the 5 hours mark,I saw hings begin to resurafce again and worsen as the Ibruprofen began to leave his system. As for long term Ibruprofen, I'm not sure on that or how long it can exactly be given. I think the longest I gave it was 2 weeks or so. But I know some here have given it for longer periods of time. As for dosing, I say call your pediatrician and ask what the highest dose you can give is. I found out my son can have more than what was on the bottle. They told me the makers of the med put conservative doses on them in case parents give more anyway. My son weighs around 43 pounds and can take 2 tsp of liquid IB. Ibruprofen is Advil, Motrin, etc. I give dye free liquid Motrin since my son will not take a pill or tablet. It's the same thing you give a child to reduce fevers. It is suggested you do not take Ibruprofen with a steroid.
Megs_Mom Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 We cannot use Advil regularly due to co-morbid stomach ulcers that seem to come at the same time as PANDAS. Not sure why. We use steroids very sparingly. I don't think most kids have this issue, but if you have recurrent tummy aches and "taste of throw-up" (child's description of acid reflux) then you might want to work with a GI doc before using for any length of time. We do use Advil occassionally for a fever.
LovingMJ Posted November 12, 2009 Author Report Posted November 12, 2009 I would really like to hear more about this. My son had a WONDERFUL day today....tic free and so well behaved. I spoke to his teacher today. My mom is with him now (I work) and it is at the 6 hour mark and tics are returning. Please, if ibuprofen works for you...please tell me more about it?
thereishope Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 I'm so glad he had a good day! It's okay to give it to him agian at the 6 hour mark. Keep in mind, it's not curing him of the existing problem, it's just taking down some of the inflamation that is present. Continue to search for a doctor and get to the root of the problem. If you continue to see a pattern with the tics improving with Ibruprofen and worsening as it wears off, that is something you will want to share with you doctors.
Buster Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Please, if ibuprofen works for you...please tell me more about it? When our dd9 was at her worst we would see a noticable improvement with Advil. Curiously we didn't see it with Aleve. Strangely, the first time we tried it was when she had a fever. In 30 min, she fell asleep. So at night, she tended to fall asleep after advil. In the morning, her behavior improved. No explanation. We wondered about Cox-II inhibitors and the research about alzheimers... but no answer. Just a curious observation that it helped. Buster

Advil has made our lives much better. After some bad PANDAS symptoms on September 17-18 following exposure to a strong GI virus that sent 5 of Thomas' classmates home from school on the same day, Thomas has been relatively tic free. He has been below his baseline of faint vocal tics with occasional head bobbing. Advil helps keep his tics under control when he is at school. I read somewhere that 200 mg a day was a safe dose for a 60 lb kid. - some previous post. I try not to give it to him everyday just when the tics are ramping up.
EAMom Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Is this harmful at all to our DCs bodies? Our immunologist felt that 200mg (54 pound child) daily was a safe long term dose. Short term you could give more often (3-4x daily, like you would for the flu). Give it with food.
