momtocole1 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Now that I know my son has PANDAS I feel like everything that is "different" about his development than my other two kids is related to the PANDAS. I know that is probably an overreaction but I just keep going there... Has anyone had an issue with their child with PANDAS in relation to baby teeth. My son will be 12 next month. He has always had a problem where in some cases his baby teeth do not come out and he new permanent teeth come in in front of the baby ones. We had to have three teeth pulled yesterday. I thought they were only going to pull one maybe two. I put it off for many, many months because he has been going through so much anxiety. Now that I understand PANDAS better it is a good thing that I did not take him before he was on the antibiotic because I think having those three open areas in his mouth could have been a breeding ground for a strep infection. He is having such a hard time recovering from the tooth extractions. The dentist gave him so much novacaine and everywhere that they gave him a shot he has a huge canker sore there now. I get the same thing though. His entire bottom lip swelled up and it is still swelled up today. I noticed some new OCD coming up today, opening and shutting doors 7 times, loudly and I was upstairs waiting for him to come out of the bathroom and I heard him urinating and he was stopping and starting the urine flow 7 times. I think it is safe to say his number is 7 today. Just when it seems that he is really making improvement, bam, we hit a blip like with the dental work. I had made a decision to just hold off on the tooth pulling and just live with extra teeth. It is so low on the list of priorities for him and I figured, we can worry about braces when he feels better. The only reason that I did it is that he begged me to go to the dentist and have the one tooth on the bottom pulled because it was protruding back towards his tongue and was becoming uncomfortable. He and I wiggled that tooth until the cows came home. It would wiggle all over but never come out. It was just deeply rooted I guess. We had two really bright spots today though... He went outside on the trampoline with our behavioral specialist who brought his daughter and brother over to play. That was a beautiful sight to see. He also said I love you when he went to bed, that's it, just I love you. For at least the last 2 years he would always say: Goodnight, I love you, sweet dreams, be safe. I always had to say those exact words back to him or he would unravel. I may have already posted about this yesterday, but tonight was the second night in a row where he just said either goodnight or I love you. It seems so trivial but it is HUGE for me and for him. Just wanted to end on a positive note. Thanks, Judy...
peglem Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I don't know if it is PANDAS related or not...my daughter (15yo) has 2 baby teeth that have not come out, but she does not have perms to replace them. On the 13th of this month, she had a root canal on one of them...and promptly got sick with something that-spike 104 fever...it got better w/ high dose abx. But her OCD amped up! On a related note, when she was @ 4 or 5 yo, she seemed really "off" for @ a week- super ragey (all 30 lbs), SIB like crazy...couldn't figure out what the heck was going on...she wouldn't eat....then she wike up one morning with a swollen cheek (oooh, I felt like such a bad mommy!). The dentist put her on Abx and scheduled surgery to take care of the abcess. When he got in there to do the work...she had 10 cavities!!!! and not just 1, but 2 abcessed teeth. The odd thing is, from then until now, she has not had another cavity. She'd been getting check-ups every 6 months....its like all 10 of those came out of no where. And of course, now I wonder if it was strep related. And 1 more thing- right now (at age 15) her 12 yr molars are erupting-all 4 of them.
colleenrn Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Yes! We definitely have the same teeth problems, but I have never made the connection with PANDAS, maybe there is or isn't, I am not sure, but find that very intersting. My 13 year old daughter had to have 8 baby teeth pulled when she was 12 1/2 b/c they would not fall out. She did not get her 1st tooth until she was almost two, then did not even start losing them until she was 8. Same thing with my 8 almost 9 year old son. First tooth at almost 2, he will be 9 in March and he has only lost 2 teeth and had to have 4 baby teeth pulled. Another issue is that once they lose their teeth, it takes forever for them to come in. My son had his teeth pulled almost 8 months ago and there is still no site of any adult teeth coming in. Judy, I have not always done this, but I do it now. If my kids have to have any dental work (even cleanings) I either increase their daily Zithromax the day before, day of, and day after the dentist OR I add another antibiotic for those 3 days. I started doing this when I found out some children have big flareups with dental work b/c it allows the strep to easily enter the bloodstream. Do you think your son is having a flareup after having his teeth pulled? Colleen
ilovedogs Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Just wanted to add that any time my ds has teeth falling out or coming in(erupting) he will wax with his anxiety and tics. We don't have a PANDAs diagnosis, but I've wondered about it b/c of his sudden onset of OCD when he was 9. The dentist threatened us with having to pull 4 teeth last year but the orthodontist(who was aware of our issues) decided it was OK to wait. So, in the last 5 months, he's finally lost those 4 teeth! Ds was so excited that he wouldn't have to get them pulled, he has terrible dentist anxiety and I wasn't looking forward to a flare up of his symptoms, either. Bonnie
Suzan Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 My youngest had her teeth grow in late and fall out late. She also has had one tooth that did not fall out and the perm one grew in behind it. I know that this is a problem with Celiac children and my dd is possible celiac, definate gluten intolerant. Maybe it's autoimmune related? Susan
faith Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 hiya bonnie , Did the ocd flair calm down? its hard about the teeth issue, becaue really all kids are losing teeth all during the childhood stage. so hard to gauge if it has anything to do with anything. but I find what Colleen said to be probably the most probable, that the strep can enter easy during the time when the teeth are out. But if you don't know that's a possibility, we are always looking for triggers for our kids tics and symptoms, but back a ways I didn't look at it from the PANDAS standpoint, so I'm really muddy here.
