TracyRee Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 DS had a PANDAS episode last fall, compulsive urination, positive strep test and behavior stopped after antibiotics. DS hasn't been himself for the last few weeks and I'm wondering if it could be PANDAS related. He's been very emotional and explosive. He also seems to think even soft touches hurt him. I was rubbing his back today and he started screaming at me that I hurt him. He's been doing that more and more lately. I made an appoitment for a throat culture tomorrow, but wanted to get some thoughts.
EAMom Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 Yes, a throat culture is a great start. Do the 72 hour culture if the rapid is neg. I would also culture family members to check for carriers. PANDAS kids can react if there are carriers in the house. Consider doing the Cunningham blood tests as well.

She does have the emotional issues, explosive temper and sensory issues with touch.
Suzan Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 We have mild OCD here with my 8 yr old but very intense emotional and behavior issues, explosive and angry. She also gets very sensitive to touch and sound. HUGS! Susan
thereishope Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 When my son is in a full fledge PANDAS episode w/ a + strep test, he has a lot of OCD. If it is a precursor to a virus (not strep), he doesn't show OCD, but extremely short tempered, cries easy, etc. So, if the strep test does not come up +, maybe he's getting sick with a cold or something. You'll learn his own patterns as time goes on. Did he have OCD with his last episode?
sf_mom Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 My son presented with mostly TICS mild OCD. I think I would have missed the symptoms if the Dr. had not pointed out what OCD behavior was to me over the phone.
monarchcat Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 My son has very little, if any OCD. I believe there are some mild ocd tendencies in his thinking, but no outward displays. He presents with tics and behavior (angry, irritable, mood lability, etc.)
smartyjones Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 my son presented with really no tics or ocd behavior - i distinctly remember the two incidents of once "needing" the rock he'd found then lost in a parking lot and one other time he wanted me to help him with a puzzle but needed me to put the pieces in the correct way. other than that, he presented with symptoms described by autistic kids with yeast trouble. (possible yeast problem brought on by strep?) He was clingy, loud, irritable, not cooperative, hyper-sensitive. He had extreme separation anxiety, used silly rhymes, repeated words & phrases, constantly chewed on shirts, often used potty talk(unusual for him). He had bad breath, was unusually thirsty and his mouth has a bad rash. He's usually had a sensitivity to sound but it was much increased. i think this really presents quite differently with different kids!
colleenrn Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 Only one of my children presents with OCD. My other two (possibly 3) children present with anger, explosiveness, low frustration tolerance, some ADD/ADHD). Your child could be having an episode now and not be showing any OCD. Also, each episode can be different. Sometimes I see OCD in my daughter, some episodes I see only tics. Each time is a little different. Colleen
