faith
Since I'm new to all this, I havn't really watched for "other" people's sickness having an effect on my child. but now I am. Wouldn't you know the boy that is over right now sounds like he has a cold and I asked him if he does and he said yes! I asked if he has a sore throat and he says lyes! I looked in his throat with a flashlight, doesn't look too bad, but don't know, he says it hurts. He told my son on the phone he was a little sick but my boy didn't tell me that, he said it was okay to come. what do I do!!?? should I throw him out. Holy moly, my son has enough of a vocal and some head thing going on that I thought might be getting slightly better, what's gonna happen now? help! what do I look out for? oh gosh. this is crazy. FallingApart
Can you send them outside to play? I wouldn't let the neighbor girl in last week with her cold and my girls were not allowed to go in her house. I will let the other expert parents chime in with other advice, but I would quickly get the children out of your house.
faith
thanks, he wound up staying for about two hours and then I brought him home. they were in and out, but now I'm paranoid. My son has vocals that can be really pronounced at times (and of course I'm hearing them now). but sometimes its more, sometimes less, really hard to tell day by day. Now I'll watch him like a hawk to gauge his symptoms from now on. Faith
P_Mom
All you can do is wait and see...we can't keep our kids isolated from illness (unfortunately).....this will happen. Usually, you will notice an increase of symptoms BEFORE the signs of illness show...If signs of illness even do show up....sometimes they don't, you'll just see behaviors/tics. bmom
I have a question on this one. I should know, and I think I do but want to find out others thoughts. If it's tourettes, do children get worse with illness? Or just PANDAS kids?
P_Mom
BMom, All I know is that some TS parents have noticed illness to be one of their childs major triggers. Don't know if this is just an overlap thing...or, could it in actuality be PANDAS? Just a thought....not saying they are the same thing......... but?......... bmom
OK, again, think I know the answer (you would think I was an amatuer around here!) but symptoms getting worse during illness is very "PANDAS" like?
P_Mom
Extremely!! BMom......did you ever get the Cunningham tests done on your son? If so.....results?
bmom
Nope, not yet. Working on it! He did recently have symptoms (tics, and urination frequency)-3 days later very sick and tested positive for swine flu. Flu done and all is back to no PANDAS symptoms. I just wish the IVIG would have kicked all symptoms even with illness!
EAMom
As far as I know, urinary frequency isn't seen with regular tourettes, just pandas.
faith
we've had discussions on the ts board that revealed that some of our kids seem to "decrease or actually cessate" tics (just speaking tics) when they have an illness like a virus. When my son gets virus (and this is very infrequent, maybe once a year) he just gets weak and won't eat and will vomit several times for a day, then he's better. that's the only real illness I've seen in him, and during those times, he seems not to tic. wierd. ..... this is making me think, maybe when he is exposed, and doesn't get sick himself, it shows in increase in his tic symptoms, but when he does contract the virus (not strep or anything respiratory), maybe the illness is being carried out normally and he 'does'nt' tic at that time (talking 24-36 hrs) because maybe his body is naturally fighting the illness with normal symptoms? ... totally just speculating here. ....but seems interesting to me. P_Mom
Faith....I know on another post you mentioned about Add/ADHD symptoms. My older son has this. Very mild when no PANDS flair...doesn't interfere with anything, but, when he is in PANDAS flair...the ADHD/ADD increase. This is part of PANDAS. I think you are on to something about reacting "standardly" to illness with no tics...as opposed to no "standard" symptoms and tics.
L Haven
Well that's not very thoughtful! Do the parents of your child's friends know about the PANDAS? We're grateful - people have been really good about giving us info before a play date. Keep hand gel by the doors and sinks of your house, and have kids gel as they come and go. Make sure they're not sneezing into their hands. When I feel like I just can't risk it, one remedy is a computer game simultaneously played in both houses. There are several good ones: Puzzle Pirates comes to mind (as long as they sail on the same sea, they can "see" each other, and play games together. I've also let the kids chat with each other while seeing each other thru the computer cams in each home. Lena
