Does this sound right?

I saw a different dr. last year who put ds on 2 times a week of zithromax for 3 months (250 mg I think)...

I am now back at my regular ped office with this because I found out one of the doctors in the practice does indeed believe in and treat for... ds just finished up 10 days of amox for strep and now he said that he will put him on a month of it daily and then talk to me at the end of the month to see how things are going. Does this sound right? I saw improvement with the 10 days in attitude and mood and less throat clearing.

Hi Erica,

I have seen people posts that they use Amoxicillin but not sure about the dose? I am sure people will respond who have used it.

During my son's second episode, I was able to convince the ENT to keep him on amoxicillan as a preventative measure until he had his tonsils and adenoids removed. He was on them for about 3 months. By the time he had his t and a surgery, he was back to himself 100%. Unfortunately, they would not continue the proph amox after surgery and he got strep a month later. They chalked the strep infection up to bad luck!

His proph dose of amox was lower than what he was on when was being treated for an active strep infection. If amox works for him and you continue to see improvement, I don't see a reason to change. Just try your best to get the doctor to renew his script and let your son stay on antibiotic indefinitely for now.

Do know that sometimes strep does break through prophylactic antibiotics. So, if you see signs of PANDAS resurfacing after improvement, a strep infection still needs to be ruled out and a different antibiotic may be needed.

If that happens would he possibly still have a positive strep test or only would show with bloodwork?

My daughter has had positive strep test (rapid) while on antibiotics.

If that happens would he possibly still have a positive strep test or only would show with bloodwork?

I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to that one.

If you have a positive strept test while on one antibiotic do you switch antibiotic?

We have switched antibiotics sometimes, or we have increased the dosage of the one we were already on prophylacticly.

Hi Erica,

After a horrendous experience with severe PANDAS in summer '08, our d cleared after a steroid burst and while on Amoxicillan.

Then, last fall our daughter had two colds which brought out OCD and ticcing--having had good experiences with Amoxicillan we started her on treatment dosage and the first time it was within 48 hours that we could see a pronounced decrease in her symptoms, the second time it was within 24 hours. The doctor at the time said it was the Amoxicillan.

Then last winter, she got a very bad cold (104 temp.) and we started on Amoxicillan. To make a long story short, she continues on full strength. Week to week we saw improvements.

Thanks! The dr. said he was calling in chewables so I didn't have to go back since the liquid only lasts 14 days but they said they don't make it anymore... last year they had me mix it myself.. just gave me the powder and distilled water.. this time I will just go back in 2 weeks for the rest of it.

I am a little concerned because I thought his throat clearing was kinda stopping and it has increased just since yesterday already this morning. I am going to cross my fingers and remember that this takes time.

My dr. admitted he is new to pandas but said so far the amox. has worked for the few kids he has treated with it. I am just so grateful that a dr. in my practice is treating this and acknoledging that it is real.
