ajcire Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 Can someone tell me about advil? I just noticed someone mentioned it as something to try. Is it safe? How much? My ds is 7 and 51 pounds. I am taking him in today for a strep rapid test and culture and then if negative will be trying to get the other dr. to put him back on zithromax anyway but am curious about the advil.
thereishope Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 Ibruprofen is NSAID. Non steroidal anti-inflammtaory. So, many (including myself) have found that when they give their child Ibruporfen it takes down some of the swelling on the basal ganglia and relieves some of the PANDAS symptoms. Some are giving it on a daily basis , some are giving it when they see a flare up in symptoms. It is safe to give if you are NOT giving a steroid. Streoids and IB cannot be combined.
ajcire Posted September 21, 2009 Author Report Posted September 21, 2009 Thank you! Do you just use children's advil? I am guessing if I have him on an antibiotic that I should not though so that I can tell which is working if anything is working? I am hoping to have him on an antibiotic within the next few days if my plan goes as I am hoping. Guessing I should hold off and not start advil? Ibruprofen is NSAID. Non steroidal anti-inflammtaory. EAMom Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 You can give a 50 pounder a 200mg tablet if he can swallow pills. You might notice a difference in about 30-40 minutes. The advil lasts 6-8 hours so you might notice a change even if you are also doing abs. Try to give with food it with food.

ajcire Posted September 21, 2009 Author Report Posted September 21, 2009 So if this reduces swelling why can't a neurologist just see pandas in an MRI? Forgive me if these are silly questions.
thereishope Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 I give dye free liquid children's Advil. Personally, if his behaviors are still disruptive or something that is really bad, I'd give the Advil even w/ the antibiotic. I would think they can see the swelling on an MRI, but I'm not really sure. Maybe someone else will have insight on that.

Hi Vickie-- Just wondering where you got the impression that you could not use ibuprofen when taking steroids? thanks--
monarchcat Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 He won't swallow a pill. I thought the same thing about my ds (8), but just last weekend we were out and he had a headache from riding in the car and all I had were advil pills. I talked him into taking a big mouthful of juice, then pushing the pill in between his lips, swishing around and swallowing the juice (thus swallowing the pill). Worked like a CHARM! By the next day I had him swallowing big honking probiotic capsules (had to bribe him with money to try it the first time, lol) Give it a shot! It thought it would be easier to take the sip of juice first, that way he never really felt the pill on his tongue. Oh, and in answer to the original question, I started having him take advil about a week after he started abx. Either the abx really started working around that time or the advil really helped because all of a sudden I had a new kid at home... patient, kind, calm, etc. It was wonderful for three days and then he got sick, unfortunately. It's worth a try! Just try to make sure he eats when he takes it so it doesn't upset his stomach.
EAMom Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 When we asked our dr. about it she said using them together can be too hard on the stomach/gi tract. When we did our steroid burst, we just stopped the advil during that time.
thereishope Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 It was on the printout w/ the prednisone. The pharmacist told us as well when I asked. Ibruprofen is NSAID. thereishope Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 I just read my Advil bottle. It also states something about increasing the chance of stomach bleeding if taken w/ a steroid.
EAMom Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 I think they make chewable advil as well. Advil jr. or something like that... Here's info. on teaching your child to swallow pills. http://www.aboutourkids.org/articles/pill_...owing_made_easy My dd learned when she was 7, but used cheerios instead of candy.
EAMom Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 So if this reduces swelling why can't a neurologist just see pandas in an MRI? Forgive me if these are silly questions. You sometimes can. Here's the study. http://www.pandasnetwork.org/SWEDOMRIstudy2000281[1].pdf However, as a "test" for PANDAS it isn't very good, b/c the changes aren't usually very dramatic (poor sensitivity and specificity). The basal ganglia could still look to be within the range of "normal", esp. considering there is some individual variability in basal ganglia size.
familyof4 Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 I just want to add that using advil daily can cause really nasty rebound headaches that can take weeks to go away. We were strongly cautioned by our doctor not to use it daily although I know some on this forum do.
