Another one of my friends said that she had heard that you negated the benefits of probiotics and antibiotics if you gave them simultaneously.

Right now, I give my daughter (post IVIG) a smoothie containing her antibiotic and probiotic in the morning.

Does anyone know if this really does negate the benefits?

Thanks,

Manda

If the probiotic is bacterial the antibiotic will kill it. But if your probiotic is boulardii (a gut friendly yeast) antibiotics will not kill it. I think you're supposed to wait a couple of hours after antibiotic to give the bacterial probiotic. If your child is on an antifungal (nystatin, diflucan) then you have to give the boulardii a few hours after because that will destroy the boulardii.

Hello:

I think you will get different answers depending on what you read.

I just checked out a book called "Probiotics" from the library and it said that you should be taking probiotics while you take antibiotics, but to space them at least 4 hours apart. I also read on line that if you are on antibiotics, then you should be taking at least 150 billion units of probiotics a day to counter the damage of the good bacteria from the antibiotics.

And our pediatrician said to definitely take 2 capsules a day (250 mg. each) of saccharomyces boulardii while on antibiotics. I guess this is a good yeast that fights the bad yeast caused by antibiotics.

So.... are you giving saccharomyces boulardii AND probiotics?

We are (thus far) just giving the boulardii but no probiotics. I'm putting the antibiotics in a smoothie w/Kefir. Do you think the Kefir is killing the antibiotics?? Yikes!!

I am doing both probiotics and Saccharomyces boulardi. I give the probiotics/S. boulardi first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and then again at night on an empty stomach. The analogy our nutritionist gives is that it is filling up the holes in the trash can (leaky gut syndrome) and it will be more effective on an empty stomach.

I don't know much about Kefir, but my guess would be that if there is any killing being done its the other way round-the antibiotic killing good bacteria in the kefir. Not sure if anything kills antibiotics.

The school can give probiotics for you if they have a doctor's order. Then in the evening you could give the probiotics a few hours after the antibiotics.

I'd give it a few hours after each abx dose. Abx kills bacteria-good and bad, so I'd want to keep replenishing the good.

I just arrested out a book alleged "Probabilistic" from the library and it said that you should be demography probabilistic while you yield antibiotics, but to amplitude them at atomic 4 hours apart. I as well apprehend on band that if you are on antibiotics, again you should be demography at atomic 150 billion units of probabilistic a day to adverse the accident of the acceptable bacilli from the antibiotics.

Elizabeth....most probiotics (I have seen a couple that said otherwise), but, most should be given on a full stomach....food helps to neutralize stomach acid and give the probiotics a better chance to survive. Check the directions on the particular brand you have....the two we have say "Full" stomach....after a meal.

Kelly - good point.

We switch probiotics around quite a bit to get a variety of stains. Currently we are using Custom Probiotics and they say to take the probiotics on an empty stomach. You can find articles stating that it is more important to take them on an empty stomach so that they are more effective and then you can find articles saying to take them with food because of the stomach acidity being higher when your stomach is empty.
