september/October allergies

Hello all

Well pretty sure over here that Nicholas is having a allergy/tic reaction to the ragweed and mold outside that grows in September/October. Last year October 31st was the beggining of the whole ordeal with Nick and observing him now leads me to follow my gut ..he has to be reacting to the outside environment. I am GOING crazy suffering with my allergies. Sneezing like a mad woman constantly. I even started to feel a wheeze coming on. (very rare for me) I know the "counts" of something are through the roof. Also at Nicks dads house there is no trees or grass. He lives by the bay. Nick is always better at his dads. So I am moving forward to the next level with Nick to solve this puzzle. We see Chung on Monday and I might get him tested for environmental allergies and begin to neutralize him to the offenders.

abbe,

I've been wondering about mold these days myself. what have you learned re mold this time of year? I read that it is highest in late summer. Does your son have any vocal tic? my son's motor tics wax/wane/change, but the vocal is pretty constant, sometimes more than others, but has been around for several years, so I wonder if it is something environmental? However, I have done the environmental allergy testing thru our Dan doctor who is also an immunologist, and we did get a neutralization nasal spray. I used it for many months and I don't recall that it helped with his tics, so I wound up abandoning it. this was more than two years ago. he did not test high for anything, the most was 4 or 5 out of a 10, which would be considered moderate and that was for I think ragweed and a certain mold. .... I wish I could try it all again, but it was hard on my son with all the needle pricking...

I just had my son to the allergist to test for food and env. allergies and he is really not allergic to anything according to the tests. He had a 7 on dog, bermudia grass...but they said 7 is the bare minimal for being allergic...everything else was 6 and below. It is wierd how he always gets stuffy around this time of year, but apparently has no allergies!!! I am glad he has none, but was hoping the testing would uncover something.

I know that my ds is ticcing more and we're both having more allergy symptoms. I've tried giving him allergy meds but I don't see them helping nor do I see them helping with the tics. I already know that my ds wouldn't be able to handle the needle pricking from the allergist tests so I have yet to take him in. We've done NEAT and I do think it lowered his allergic environmental reactions but it didn't help with the tics. Truly, I think there are more than 1 factor in regards to his tics. Environmental allergies, stress, teeth coming in or out, etc all contribute to his tics. I still don't think he reacts to any foods b/c he never just explodes with tics, just environmental stuff has made him explode. There's usually just a gradual increase in the case of allergies and stress.

It's funny that they said your son really doesn't have any allergies based on the testing and yet he's always stuffy. Ds is always stuffy and so am I. Every single morning, all year long. That makes me think mold or dust mite allergies. Of course, I live in the desert and it hardly ever rains here and I don't have any leaks in the plumbing(as I've had that checked) so I wonder if dust mites are a factor?

Nicholas is NEVER stuffy and never sneezes. But it is hard for me to believe or ignore the clues that the fall is when he had a bad onset last year and at his dads there is no trees, grass or dogs and he is better. We are getting hardwood flooring as we speak and dogs are groomed and house is sooooooo clean so I think it is outside.

abbe,

what is the tic that kicks up for your son during Fall? motor or vocal? or both? And the allergies you have, you know that mold and stuff at this time of year is doing it for you? again, how much do you know about the mold allergens, I'm trying to look at that too, as I've seen more vocals since August, altho his vocal is always around pretty much year round. This is the first summer they have been bad tho, so tracking the allergens would be interesting. see my post above.

Ok, I'm jealous! You just said your house is soooooooo clean! I wish I could say that about my home. I know I need to do a better job of controlling the dust in ds's room, though, but I just never seem to get in there and he's got books, trophies, and stuff on all his shelves that I HATE dusting his room.

Our naturopath just gave us a nasal spray that has quercetin in it b/c supplementing with quercetin wasn't doing much for him. I'm going to give it a try and see if it helps. He blows his nose every morning and is usually stuffy, but as the day wears on it clears up. This tells me the problem is in his room, could be all those stuffed animals and Webkinz he insists on collecting. When do boys outgrow this phase anyway?

Hey it's abbe,

Well my house is very clean and Nick doesn't seem to get a reaction at home. It's just that I read that September and October are ragweed/mold. Last year he had the explosion on October 31 neck and throat clearing. prior to that he had an eye tic but I never knew he did (thought it was him needing glasses) ok so all of july and maybe june he was 100% tic free I mean NOTHING EVER. Then BOOM one day beggining of September home from dads and neck tic and a little throat you could never notice. I am going for allergy testing (one thing at a time) on Tuesday
