I remembered many parents saying they noticed their children increasing carb intake during PANDAS episodes but didn't know why. Well, I was watching tv this morning and they explained it. Carbs increase serotonin levels and, in turn, causes people to feel calmer and more relaxed. So, when your children have that urge to increase their carbs during a PANDAS episode, their body is actually taking care of itself and trying to correct something that it realizes it is lacking.

Thanks, I never knew other parents noticed this. I noticed my son always seemed hungry during an exacerbation.

I guess it's a similar mechanism to what makes people eat a lot when highly stressed.

I was at a conference last week and she spoke about this. I guess a lot of kids that are on the autism spectrum go for carbs.

She spoke about when you are in extreme stress - you will not want to eat anything but when you calm down from the stress you will crave carbs. She said the problem now days is most people are under stress all the time - especially kids that are sick.

Thanks for posting that.

We were just noticing over the last few weeks that our dd's diet completely changes with her mood and pandas symptoms. You can almost tell what kind of a day she's going to have by what she's asking for for breakfast.
