Guest Guest_efgh
Hi all I just got back from my first trip with the naturopath (listed in www.acam.org). The doctor was a lot experienced in natural cure (but not specifically tics though). Had a long general talk about my son's allergies, asthma, tics , vitamin regimen etc. He asked me to stop flax and start fish oil due to EPA/DHA 500 mg. He has given a B complex to be given in addition to the multivit, mag. taurate, calcium citrate, zinc . He said B complex and fish oil are in general essential. He said he would be willing to take another complete allergy test to check for Ige and Iga... (we had long back done a skin prick allergy test for my son) to test for food allergies etc. He said he would also like to do a hair analysis test as a next step. He had given a comprehensive Digestive stool analysis and parasitology test kit (CDSA) test Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory. any one else did the CDSA test from the same lab. Lets see how things move on from here. Hoping for the best. P.S - He said that there is a LOT of link between tics and allergies. When I said my son's asthma is under better control now, he said that probably tics are the extension of the same allergies. Your inputs on CDSA and what to expect from the results would be appreciated. does it test for yeast too?
Guest Guest_efgh
In addition to my above post on today's visit to the naturopath Jean, Did you get the results of CDSA (stool test) for your son? I read in one of your posts that you did the same stool test as us in great smokies lab. would be interested to know your results. how long did it take for the results to come out after the CDSA test? thanks
Claire
Hi efgh, We had the cdsa test too. It was a couple of weeks and did have a yeast element. I think my son 'passed' that yeast test though, and it showed up on another urine test. My son basically 'passed' the cdsa test, other than showing high inflammation of the digestive tract, which the DAN/EM doctor and I assumed was due to the wheat allergy (he was still eating wheat). Good luck with the rest--the protocol does sound similar. Claire
Jennifer
efgh, We just sent in ou CSDA test in last week, but it was not Great Smokies, the doctor uses a local lab for that one. Today we do the DMSA challenge test to see what heavy metals come out. Our doctor really thinks that mercury is the culprit with our son. Hope you get some good answers for your son!! Guest Guest_efgh
ALL Did your insurance cover the CDSA test cost? Heard its around 500 dollars. Jean, yes it includes long/short fatty chain acids, yeast and bacteriology. thanks.
Guest Jean
Hi Efgh, It took us about 2+ weeks to get test results back. All, I got a short e-mail from my ND today regarding my son's heavy metal and CSDA test results. There is NO heavy metals, but CSDA test showed some imbalances in his digestive system. She didn't mention the detail. I'll visit her tomorrow, and keep you all updated. BTW, would someone please let me know how reliable the CSDA test results ? Thanks in advance! Jennifer
Jean, Just wondering what method the Dr. used to test for heavy metals? We did a hair analysis a couple of years ago that showed high levels, but I have since read that they may not always be accurate because if the body is not excreting it wouldn't show...at the same time I've read that it reflects the tissue stores...I'm a little confused on that one, however, we just did the DMSA challenge test which is more accurate than just relying on hair. Maybe that is the one you did, but I just wanted to pass the hair analysis info. on. Jennifer
Claire
Jean/Jennifer My doctor said the blood test (is this what a DMSA challenge is?) is more accurate than the hair test, and the tissue test is the most accurate. Jean, while I am happy for you(!), I just wanted to point this out just in case. More on this on my EM doctor thread--I will post my son's results, they just came back. Jennifer
Claire, DMSA is a substance used to chelate heavy metals. In a challenge test one dose is administered and urine is collected for 6 hours. The lab checks the urine for heavy metals. Mercury cannot be detected through a blood test unless it is on going mercury exposure. After 3 months it is no longer free flowing in the blood stream and binds very tightly to tissue. Using DMSA helps dislodge the mercury, it is then excreted through the kidneys and the amounts are measured in the urine. I have read though, that if mercury toxicity is strongly suspected based on symptoms and the urine test comes back clean that doesn't mean you're in the clear. Mercury with time becomes harder and harder to remove and may not show during a preliminary challenge test. Jennifer P.S. I'm editing this post because I just read your latest on the mercury results. I know how you must feel. We want all the answers to get our kids well, but when we find certain things out it is overwhelming!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not sure what kind of advice to give on mercury detox. There are so many factors. You want to make sure the detox pathways are functioning properly before you start cleansing or you run the risk of the mercury redistributing somewhere else. From what I've read preliminary tests for kidney and liver function are basically manditory before trying to get the mercury out and you want to try to lower the body burden before using supplements such as alpha lipoic acid to get it out of the brain. The latest thing seems to be boosting Mt function, which is the protien neccesary in detoxing mercury..it basically becomes disabled and needs to be restored. I found a good article on one of the autism websites I'll look it up and post it. Best of luck!!! Jennifer
Guest Jean
Claire and Jennifer, Thanks for the info.! I just finished the consultation with our ND. I give you the quick summary and will write more tonight. Based on his Heavy Metal Hair analysis and Stool test, there is no heavy metal, no yeast overgrow, but some imbalance in his digestive system (I don't get all those names). Basically, his "good" bacteria is low or "gone". She will work on it to bring it back. She said that's a best test results (among her patients) that she ever seen. Now I'll have to think what could be contributing to my son's tics. My last June miss-carriage must be an important factor (?). My own doctor had suggested seeing a psychologist as my son still thinks about babies. Any one has experience with psychologist to help tics? I'll post more tonight. Guest Jean
Hi All, As I mentioned in my earlier post, there is no heavy metal and yeast over grow from the test. However, his beneficial flora: Lactobacillus is Zero+, Bifidobacter is Two+. The ND said this could be due to the (last month) use of antibiotics. His imbalances Alpha strep and Mucoid E. coli are high. Honestly, I don’t quite understand the imbalances. Any input on it is appreciated. So the treatment plan is: 1). Remove Soy and Wheat from his diet for 2 -4 weeks 2). HMF for imbalanced digestive flora – to bring Lactobacillus etc. to the balance level 3). Homeopathic drops for detoxification – she said that although the test results are good, but there still may be some toxic in his body. She would like to detoxify first then she'll try to balance his body nutrition. The goal is to strong his immune system eventually. 4). Super EFA (fish oil) 5). B-6 complex: Thiamine – 40mg Riboflavin- 28.6mg Niacin - 80 mg Vitamin B6 – 206.8 mg Folic Acid - 200 mcg Vitamin B12 – 100 mcg Biotin – 80 mcg Patothenic Acid – 45mg Choline Citrate - 40 mg Again, any feedback on the B-6 complex is also appreciated! Guest Guest_efgh
Jean Good to know that your son's test results are good. Reg. the psychology aspect, do you think that your son tics more during stress?? Does he still remember your miscarriage? How are his tics now? Which Super EFA and B complex does your naturopath suggest? Which brands? The B complex values appear pretty high ... I am planning to get nordic natural fish oil for my son. goodluck
Chemar
Jean some people tolerate B-complex well and others dont.... my family doesnt...it makes us nauseaous and "spacy" plus upsets digestion. We can handle B in our multi and as individual supps so that is how I give it. If yoyr child tolerates the B-co...great, but dont give it on an empty stomach! All the best to you.....hope things start to get better real fast as you follow this treatment
Guest Guest_efgh
Chemar, you say you tolerate B well in the multi and as individual suppls - what do you mean by individual suppls.. can you please explain..
Guest Jean
Chemar, Thanks for the info. on B-complex. Besides nauseous, what other B-complex intolerants that you’ve seen? Efgh, My son tics more if there is any emotional change, ie., exciting, angry and nerves. We don’t talk about miscarriage anymore, but he is still kind of sad when he sees a baby. The B-complex# 6’s brand name is Thorne and the oil called Genestra Brand Super EFA liquid.
