we found it helped with both.....but then I find it hard to distinguish between them as they really do often blend in most cases of OCD an obsessive thought often becoming a compulsive action and a compulsion becoming an obsession.

By Definition:OCD is characterized by obsessive thoughts and/or compulsive behaviors. Obsessions are unwanted, recurrent, and disturbing thoughts which the person cannot suppress and which can cause overwhelming anxiety. Compulsions are repetitive, ritualized behaviors that the person feels driven to perform to alleviate the anxiety of the obsessions.

PHEW!! I am so glad we dont have this anymore....and I do attribute it to the elevated seratonin from the 5HTP

phobias/ fears can be a part of OCD but can also have other root causes......

Have you tried your son on just INOSITOL (vitB8)?

It really does seem to help a lot and I havent yet heard any adverse reports from its use at age appropriate dose

here is the iHerb link

http://healthinfo.healthgate.com/GetConten...&chunkiid=21766

and then there is also GABA which some find very useful.

We add GABA whenever the OCD was waxing and it calmed immediately

Since he has stabilised, we dont use GABA anymore, just the daily 5HTP, SJW and Inositol (as I mentioned before, we use SJW in the mornings instead of 5HTP so he doesnt get drowsy)

I dont have any info on just treating obsessions but it is my personal feeing that it is also a seratonin deficiency.

HOWEVER, in your sons case, the strep infection itself could have so toxified his system that this caused his fears and phobias especially as he was then also HIGH MERCURY (known to cause irrationality) and HIGH YEAST (with all its many health ramifications)

HTH

also hope you are feeling better........I sure know what the yeast did to me so I feel for you! But the good news is that, with diet changes and the capryllate it quickly gets controlled.

(ps also need to mention that colonic irrigation , as unpleasant as it is, :) is one of the fastest ways to boost the yeast detox! )

Claire.......yoghurt doesnt trigger dairy allergies like milk does...even acidophilus milk....that only helps if someone is lactose intolerant, but it there is an actual general dairy allergy...best to avoid cow's milk!...but Yoghurt is a-OK

I just found something FJ* posted on her Pyroluria thread at braintalk

I think obsessive thoughts result from a different metabolic pathway being affected. Bonnie Gr has done much more thinking on this subject and thinks it is related to magnesium, inositol or kynureine. She may be right.

Jean, what dosage of inositol do you give your son? do you see any improvement in tics/fears after that. Inositol also helps tics, I heard.

Hi Efgh,

My son is doing pretty good. Thanks for asking! He has not started Inositol yet ( he's suppose to start it a week ago) as we're sort of "struggling" with his detox reactions (i.e., increased tics, skin rashes). We finially decided to take one at a time. Under the naturopath's guidence, his body is able to handle the current detox process that is much slower process than the one original planed. The naturopath gives him 1 (650mg) each time, and 3 times/day. We plan to have him started it next week. Our naturopath also suggested to start from 1 time/day in the begining and gradually increase up to 3 times a day. It's good to know Inositol helps tics as well. My understanding from our naturopath, it'll help the body detox better. My son definitely improves daily (but still no TV yet). How is your son doing?

Hi Chemar and Jean,

Thanks! I will check out inositol, and investigate kynureine. He already takes magnesium--but he wasn't taking it when he had the fears.

efgh

re Caprylic Acid, I just give him 2/3's the dosage on the bottle. But some bottles are soooo different in amounts. I am reading a ton and can't find anything on dosages. Also, one thing I read said capryllic acid and over the counter remedies are good for yeast in the gastro. tract, but not for systemic yeast or a long standing condition. Not sure how you tell the difference. I will do more research over time and let you know if I ever find out more.

Claire

ps Well Chemar, as for 'colonic irrigation' I just can't do it to my son (he resists even pills, and would never go for it!), but if needed, I will try it out, oh dear.
