Guest Guest_efgh
Chemar I heard st john's wort is very good for ocd ... did st john's wort alone not help your son for his ocd? Have you tried it like that before? also, read somewhere that the gelatin cover used in most of the capsules is not so good for general health. is it true?? can you educate me more on this please? any possible harmful effects from the gelatin cover in the capsules. are all your vitamins and capsules covered with this gelatin cover only? thanks for your reply. Chemar
hi efgh The st Johns wort helped my son's depression, but not the OCD.......the ONLY thing that has worked to bring his OCD under control is the 50mg 5HTP each evening. As I have mentioned before, my husband doesnt tolerate 5HTP well, and so he takes SJW which he feels helps his depression and mild OCD Most of our supps are tablets, and only a few are gelatin capsules. I have no problems with gelatin at all, and believe that it is only people who are allergic to it who do.
Guest Frank_Sm1th
efgh- If I may jump in here, I've also noticed that a lot of folks dislike gelatin. I think it's partly a vegetarian thing, but in light of scrapie and mad cow disease, it's getting harder to trust animal products. My wife says how can anyone know how pure gelatin is? It's made from animal bones and how can they keep nerve tissue out of the process? Frank
Guest Guest_efgh
Thanks. But do you think that by just giving the contents of the capsule WITHOUT the gelatin cover, we are eliminating the "gelatin" totally?? If so, that sounds ok and I can go ahead and just give the contents. Would wait for your inputs on this. How about Bonnie's vitamins - for those who use this. Is it with gelatin covers as well? thanks.
Chemar
efgh I believe that by opening a capsule and taking out the contents you would be eliminating the gelatin. I hear what Frank is saying, but I personally dont feel threatened by the gelatin Many manufacturers off supplements are becoming sensitive to vegetarian needs and using VCAPS=vegetarian capsules All of Bonnie's supps are made with Vcaps so no animal gelatin in them here is a link to the ingredient info in her supps http://www.bonniegr.com/products.htm A lot of parents whose children struggle to swallow pills do open them up and mix the ingredients with food or drink, which works fine for kids who either dont notice or dont mind the taste of the contents
Guest Guest_efgh
Chemar and Frank thanks a lot for your information. Chemar, why do you feel that you personally dont feel threatened by the gelatin?? (especially when our kids are taking quite a few supplements with gelatin). Frank, not only capsules a lot of products like cheese, dairy , tooth paste etc contain gelatine, don't they? How do you take care to avoid them? thanks. Chemar
most of our capsule supps have VCaps so no gelatin...the rest are tablets as for those with it.......yes, there are mad cow etc scares....but gelatin isnt made from the nerve tissue, which is what is the scare area. If I was going to take the fear to that extreme, i would totally stop eating beef! We live in a world where we truly never know what we are consuming and so I am just not going to get totally paranoid about it...I try to be as careful as possible, and, as I mentioned, most of my sons supplements are TABLETS not capsules, and the ones that are capsules are mainly VCAPS I went thru a phase of being so freaked out over foodstuff content that I drove myself and my family to distraction.....now, i am diligent where necessary, but not to extreme anymore
Guest Guest_efgh
Thanks Chemar. You are SO right! Any one knows which company makes calcium citrate and magnesium taurate in vcaps? Chemar
Bonnie's mag taurate is in vcaps http://www.bonniegr.com/ts-PLUS%20Mag%20Taurate.htm The "NOW" supplements are also available in vcaps, and they do make a calcium citrate product that way too http://www.clubnatural.com/caca240vcnow.html
Guest Frank_Sm1th
efgh- Actually, I don't go out of my way much to avoid gelatin, but usually open supplement caps and discard the gelatin. I've never seen gelatin on the label of anything here, but my wife says cheap junky yogurt and overprocessed dairy products contain gelatin. We try to stick to food and products that are on the Feingold list; I'm not sure what the Feingold doctrine is on gelatin. Not knowing how they boil the gelatin out of the bones, it's hard to imagine them not getting some nerve tissue and mad cow prions into the mix. The only gelatin I eat is in my ginkgo capsules; have you ever tasted ginkgo Frank
Guest Guest
Hi Frank Thanks again for your detailed input. No, I haven't tasted ginkgo. why, do they taste bad?? Once you open the supplement caps and discard the gelatin, are the contents inside TOTALLY free from gelatin?? also, do you mix the contents (after discarding the gelatin cover) with juice or yoghurt to take it inside? thanks. Guest Frank_Sm1th
efgh- I just open the capsules and dump the contents on my tongue and swallow, usually with water. How many molecules of the gelatin could possibly get into the supplements? Ginkgo tastes bitter, digusting, nauseating! I don't have the time to make it into a tea or mix it into something palatable. Chemar
Frank you can also get Ginko in tablets My son uses those
Claire
Chemar or anyone else with experience with OCD symptoms and supplements--- Does 5HTP help with compulsions or obsessions or both? I tried 5HTP 2 times with my son when he had fears during strep and it really wired him to the point of freaking both of us out. Is there something else that you recommend for the obsessions part. I really want to have it on hand should that ever happen again, it was just horrible for him. I will of course investigate what you recommend, but your guidance would be greatly appreciated to help me get started. More the obsession part than anxiety part. Thanks, Claire
