kasmama
Hi! My daughter has had tics on and off for several years, and for a while I thought we had them gone by controlling the stress level around the house. But they're back, and stronger. She's 10, but I keep getting more mystified the more I read. She has *no* comorbid conditions - OCD, anxiety, ADHD, etc. My sister (32yo) has terrible Tourettes, complete with copralalia, but the things I assumed were the causes (processed foods, insufficient omega 3) aren't issues - we eat only whole foods, plenty of natural fats, and daily fermented cod liver oil. I & my husband have always had very minor (known only to us) tics, but none of the family has any comorbids except my sister's anxiety. I know candida has been associated, and 2 of my sons and I are battling it, but my daughter is the one who has shown no signs at all of it. She doesn't crave sugar, passed the spit test, etc. I plan to start the candida regimen on her, but I just can't wrap my brain around *why* she might have this issue. I don't believe that these things just happen randomly and genetically to some people; I think there is a cause. She is the only one of my children to be vaccinated for more than a year. I don't think I completed any of the series with her, though, and ceased around age 3, iirc. I appreciate any insight!
Chemar
Hi and welcome although diet and other factors may contribute as triggers for tics, yet IMO if you have a family history of tics and tourettes, then you are likely seeing genetic TS manifesting, and sometimes it is very hard to pinpoint just what the trigger(s) may be for the genetic "switch on" I personally think it is a combination of things, including internal biological factors eg the hormonal changes at and during puberty, when it seems the tics are usually at their worst. The other factors like vaccines, diet, nutritional deficiencies, candida, strep and other infections etc etc are without a doubt very important in the manifesting of the symptoms. But our own experience has taught me there must be more going on in genetic TS/tic conditions There does not necessarily have to be any co-morbid condition with the tics for a TS diagnosis just an FYI that we have many reports here about fish oil, which is usually an excellent and healthy source of Omega fatty acids, yet seems to trigger tics in some people with TS.My son is one of those. He can eat as much fish as he likes without a problem but if he takes a fishoil supplement his tics immediately begin to wax. You may want to see how your child does without the cod liver oil for a few days. we use flaxseed oil instead it's good that you are looking into all these factors and trying to eliminate triggers. that protocol has really helped my son who also has genetic TS. Our experience has shown tremendous improvement for him but I have also had to accept that he tics. I am just thankful that it is now so mild that it doesnt bother him or us.
