cure_me
Hi, I'm new here. I haven't been diagnosed with turrets but I do have motor ticks. Some of which are: Head jerking. Looking up with just my eyes. Closing my eyes. And when I was around 8 I used to cough like as you would if you wanted to get someone’s attention. Also I believe that I also have OCD because I check things a lot like if I turn of a light I press several times on the switch. So I just want to know if there was anything physically wrong with my brain or is it just my mind tricking me into ticking? Also has anyone here actually grown out of it or managed to cure themselves? And is it something you're born with or does something trigger it? Because I didn't have any of this until I was 8. Also it went away when I was 10, but came back when I was 14.
AHB900
Ugh i feel your pain i got everything you mentioned plus much more. I sometimes feel it is in my head also because when my minds on something else i have no tics. ALthough i cant keep my self from remembering that i have tics which results in me ticing again. I hope somebody comes in with a real answer.
CSP
Welcome cure me, I just wanted to let you know my husband has outgrown his tics. He is 45yo now, and said the tics pretty much went away in his early twenties. He shook his head at 8yo and made noises. How old are you? I'm hoping our son will have the same pattern as husband. Good luck, cp
faith
hello cure me, i don't think any of us really knows the answers, but what I'd like to ask you is how do you feel about it all? My first inclination is to say re your motor tics, "so what?". We all have certain quirks. Do you feel at all burdened by your checking or any of the motor tics? do you feel they are just a minor or does it overtake you. I am guessing you are an adult, so it would be interesting to know how you feel about it since you were 8. I myself realize I have had some tics as a child, but they went unnoticed for the most part (no vocals). My son has motor and vocal for several years now, I hope and pray it will one day be a thing of the past. Faith
cure_me
Thanks for the replies, I'm 19. I would say it's minor for me since I can control it most of the time. But sometimes it does overtake me. Nobody except for my parents have noticed me doing it because I do have a lot of control over it when I’m around other people. Anyway recently it has started to get worse. Now I tick while I'm driving, which gets pretty scary since my tics are mostly things I do with my eyes. But so far I have been able to not drive into anything, although there were some very close calls. I don’t really feel burdened by my tics or my checking alone, but together they do waste a lot of my time. and some tics really hurt like ######. guy123
It's not "all in your mind." Tics are generally caused by errors in the brain. But it's not something you can will yourself to stop doing, or even consciously control. And it's nothing you did wrong or anything. OCD is related to tics and tourettes. They're in the same spectrum of disorders. Are you musically inclined? I've met a lot of phenomenal musicians who were OCD.
