EAMom Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 Hi Bronxmom2, I agree with Kim about the motrin (ibuprofen). We also think the ibuprofen helps with PANDAS symptoms (anti-inflammatory effects on the brain). In fact the immunologist we just saw suggested we start giving it again. (We gave it in June and July but stopped since dd was better and didn't want to use it long term b/c of concern of side effects). If you son recently got a steroid shot however, you might check with your doc if it is okay to give the ibuprofen...I don't think you are supposed to use steroids with NSAIDS. Maybe the 1 shot won't matter, esp. if it was already a few days ago..
bronxmom2 Posted March 24, 2009 Author Report Posted March 24, 2009 Thanks guys, Do you mean I should be giving him Ibuprofen now, while he's recovering from the T&A, rather than the tylenol with codeine prescribed by the hospital? I was giving him ibuprofen daily before the surgery, but stopped just beforehand because I read somewhere it could increase the risk of bleeding. His recovery from the T&A seems a little prolonged, too... it's been 4 days and still no appetite and clearly in pain. No blood, no fever, and his spirits are pretty good, so I'm not alarmed, but if he's not feeling better tomorrow I'm calling. Boy, is it QUIET in our house!!! My next concern is... will my pediatrician now consider the PANDAS "cured" and refuse to prescribe more abs, and make us wait for it all to come back? Any advice on how to work with my pediatrician (who's been fairly supportive but doesn't think ds should be on anything stronger than amoxicillin) as we move forward? Thanks!
EAMom Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 Yes, I would give Ibuprofen instead of tylenol with codeine (jeeesh, codeine makes me barf!). I would think the risk of bleeding would be past by now. You could double check with your doc to make sure this is okay. I had Ibuprofen post tooth extracton, post wrist surgery, and post child-birth...they didn't seem concerned about bleeding then.
Dedee Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 We had a very conservative surgeon who told me no when I asked about motrin after T&A. I went ahead and gave it to him anyway after the first week. He really had a difficult recovery and it seemed the motrin helped more than anything else. I had heard it was harder when they were older (he was 11), but I don't know. I do know it was worth it. He is much better now, but we did not consider him cured. In fact when he finished the 2 week post op antibiotics all of his tics came back. They put him back on them and the tics disappeared again. He has been on antibiotics pretty much since that time. He is 13 now. We have had a few minor bumps along the way, but nothing at all like before. I feel extremely blessed. Good luck with the recovery. I think you will be glad when all is said and done. Dedee
