Betty04 Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Just wondering how parents have handled azythromycin in relation to magnesium supplements. I know they need to be taken separately but this link below states that azyth lowers magnesium levels? http://www.healthgazelle.org/magnesiumandazythromycin.shtml
kim Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Betty, I looked at this the other nite but was too tired to really understand what I was reading or post. What I was thinking was that one of the articles said that the antibiotic and the magnesium occupy or compete for the same site? If that's the case, wouldn't the magnesium that's circulating in your system naturally just be absorbed after the the antibiotic is absorbed? In a long term antibiotic situation I guess one could become deficient. The Keflex that I'm taking interfers with vit K and I have been on a fairly high dose, 2nd 10 day round. I have bruising if I scratch the rashy spots. Wouldn't surprise me if I have always been vit K deficient to some extent, as I have always bruised easily. Anyway here are a couple of sites that show nutrient/drug interactions. http://www.invitehealth.com/page.htm?PG=DrugDepletion http://www.chiro.org/nutrition/ABSTRACTS/N...tibiotics.shtml http://www.vitacost.com/Healthnotes/Drug/Azithromycin.aspx MagnesiumA magnesium- and aluminum-containing antacid was reported to interfere with azithromycin absorption in a study of ten healthy people.1 People can avoid this interaction by taking azithromycin two hours before or after any aluminum/magnesium-containing products. It has not yet been shown that magnesium compounds typically found in supplements affect absorption of this drug edit... As I was checking the links to make sure they work, I noticed that the 3rd one said that azith may deplete vit K also. I guess any anti biotic that wipes out healthy gut flora (which aids in the actual production of some of these vits) is probably capable of depleting essential nutrients.
pmoreno Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 anyone know what a safe dose of magnesium would be for an 8 year old?
kim Posted January 25, 2009 Report Posted January 25, 2009 Hi Pat, Bonnie's Bontech vits contain 300 mgs of mag taurate per 10 capsules. It lists 75% under daily value. The suggested use for 35-66 lbs is 10 to 14 capsules. 67-89 lbs is 15 to 19 capsules. Hope that gives you something to go on. Also, many sites will say to give 2 to 1 ratio of calcium to magnesium. Some sites will say to give equal amts. Bontech contains equal amts (300 mgs of calcium per 10 capsules, however it only lists 30% under daily value, so I'm assuming she is leaving the rest to diet) Which ever you decide, I don't think long term supplementing of one without the other is a good idea as they need each other to avoid becoming deficient in either.

Magnesium taurate--dosing info needed, please I've not tried Bonnie's Bontech, but have supplemented w/magnesium taurate since my son was seven. It's about the only supplement that consistently reduces his tics/OCD. We don't supplement calcium, as he gets plenty + in his diet and it accumulates (kidneys, I think). He has other signs of magnesium deficiency aside from tics/OCD. Currently, he's on antibiotic strep treatment, about to restart prophs after being off several years. The treatment antibiotics are reducing vocal tics that came w/infection, but they reduce magnesium, too. The past few weeks on antibiotics he's been asking for epsom baths and completely lost his taste for milk (usually consumes at least a gal/wk). I suspect he's high on calcium...low on magnesium. I only give him 375mg (125mg 3x daily) magnesium, because that seemed therapeutic in conjunction w/dietary intake. According to Bonnie's I'm dosing too low (130 lbs @ 12 y.o.). I've been searching for recommendations on therapeutic magnesium dosing, with no success. Based on above figures, I'm considering doubling his current dose to 750mg daily. It's water soluble and side effects are minimal, but I don't want to max out, in case he needs more in the future. Does anyone have info on therapuetic magnesium dosing for his wt range? I'd appreciate any additional feedback from folks using magnesium taurate (or other form) at therapeutic doses. Thanks! Boychildsmom
Suzan Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 I use Natural Calm magnesium supplements for my girls for calming and behavior and it helps a lot! For my almost 8 yr old, I give her 1/2 tsp 2x a day. My 6.5 yr old I give 1/4 tsp 2x a day. Our doc said to just start with what the label recommended and see how it goes and so far I have not increased. I know it can cause diarrhea if too much is given. We also do epsom salt bath soaks to increase mag. sulfites and this helps a lot too. susan
